I have no way to confirm this.

Are you completing the edit within 5 minutes, or starting it? And why is it a problem?

[EDIT: This edit was started ~2 minutes after posting, and took ~30 seconds]

[EDIT 2: This edit was started ~4 minutes after posting, but I waited a couple minutes before posting. There is a 5-minute grace period after posting during which edits are not tracked, so this edit was begun during the grace period and posted after the grace period ended.]

its inconsistent, sometimes it functions normally. i will let you know if i notice it again

so like, when i make a post i post then it says 7m or something when i posted 1m ago, for example.

um WTF. there is a link popup widget that makes it extremely difficult to type anything.

Two options:

  1. It goes away when you click anywhere else in the editing box, or type something else after pasting the link. Might return on mouseover, and on touchscreen laptops there is sometimes an invisible mouse presence that continues to interact with the site. Clicking elsewhere in the editing box will fix this too.
  2. Switch back to side-by-side editor (see the annuncement) will solve the problem completely, because you see the markdown in the editing box instead of a clickable link.

i cant do math on here because it automatically forces italics on everything!!!

so if i put “*” then it makes things italic and erases the

it must have been a glitch because i tried to make it appear again, and goes away when you type. In the screenshot i was clearly typing after the URL and it was still onscreen.

If you put spaces around the asterisks they won’t be interpreted as markdown:
2 * 3 = 1 * 6

You can also use escape characters:
2\*3=1\*6 looks like this: 2*3=1*6

im pretty sure it did the time glitch again but im not 100% sure.

putting spaces does not fix it, example:

2 2 2

that was supposed to look like 2 x 2 x 2.

Do the space on both sides of the star:
2 * 2 * 2

Another option is to use LaTeX by wrapping things in dollar signs, which can do a ton of stuff:
$2*2$2*2
$2 \times 2$2 \times 2
$2 \cdot 2$2 \cdot 2
$\frac{1}{2}$\frac{1}{2}

Tons of guides out there, e.g. Essential LaTeX Commands for Mathematics Courses | Instructional Support at PCC

2 2

^ i do on both sides and thats what it does

2 2 * 2

This is what you’re doing: 2 *2*
This is what you need to do: 2 * 2 *

no i do not do that, i put a space imbetween each star

and i get this: 2 2

Oh, interesting, my mistake. Apparently in markdown mode (side-by-side mode mentioned above) the spaces work, and in rich text mode the spaces get deleted.

That’s annoying and counterintuitive.

it did the Edit carrot again after only taking less than a minute to edit a new post.

can you uncarrot my posts please it makes it look less perfect.

i take less than 1 minute to edit a post and then it carrots me.

I’m pretty sure I’ve figured out what’s going on, and I’m pretty sure it’s a bug. It seems to happen when your post contains a ‘watched word’, which for some reason closes the editing grace period that usually allows hidden edits immediately after editing.

I’ll file a bug report, in the meantime I’ll turn off most of the watched words, they’re more trouble than they’re worth anyway.
