just a thought i have been having recently and i wondered what people thought. i have come to the conclusion that everything humans do is either for efficiency or pleasure. efficiency has often been mis-labelled as laziness but some is more acceptable then others. using a tv remote is quite acceptable as efficient/lazy but walking your dog on a treadmill would be seen as lazy. opinions?
what about necessity?
how do you mean? necessity to be efficient?
I think we do things first and foremost for need, then comfort, then curiosity, then fame, then luxury, then ecstasy. Now you can bring all of these under the domain of “pleasure” which is a broad characteristic, but if you do, then nothing would be defined anymore clearly. So we need to be specific.
P.S. We also do things for helping others, for fun, for knowledge, for experimenting, for research, for education, for work, for money, for etcetera etcetera. The list is very very long and there is not enough space on the world wide web
Check out Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Very similar to BeenaJain’s description.
Except for love, Maslow’s heirarchy of needs are not needs but wants. The six basic needs of man are - food, shelter, clothing, sleep, love and financial security. When all these 6 are fulfilled we have no need for anything else in life and we’re a happy bunch. But if even one of those goes partially fulfilled then we become hungry for MORE. And then this more starts to define our life so much that we see nothing but MORE, MORE, MORE! That’s where Maslow’s heirarchy of needs comes in then to satisfy our mores. Man cannot be fully satisfied unless the six basic needs are met first and completely and not partially! All the rest after that is just a feeble substitute for the basic need that goes partially fulfilled! Since there is always something lacking in our basic six needs that is why we are never fully satisfied and hunger for more and more in our life!
