i never said all we desired was physical satisfaction - at least not as you’re likely to be defining it
that’s a strawman. i have no such belief
no but i’ve heard firsthand reports and seen Crocodile Hunter - seriously, you think it’s some kind of easy, idyllic existence to live as a primitive in a jungle?
well,at least you admit this stuff about feeble-mindedness is sloppy seconds
desire is not solely impulsive - it’s usually born of instinct, sure - like the desire for survival - but that doesn’t mean it’s purely: see-want-grab - tho it may start out that way as newborns, until we learn through experience that there are steps to take (and as you point out, work to be done) in order to sucessfully acheive most of the things we want. We have to effectively navigate our way through endless contingencies in order to attain goals- this is how we develop our reasoning skills - eventually we get to the point where we learn to hierarchize (is that a word?) our desires so that our more impulsive desires (i want that cupcake) are subordinate to our more telic desires (i want to lose weight so i can find a mate) - and reasoning is intregral to the process, but the process itself remains subordinate to the greater desires which serve as our broadest telic ends (finding a mate, being happy, whatever)
i don’t think desire is strictly personal or physical (again, at least not in the ways you are likely to be defining them) one can, as i have said, have reasoned desires - one can have empathic and altruistic desires - one can share likeminded desires with large groups, and lesser desires can be subordinated to all of the above, using, among other things, reason - but all of the above are stll desires, and without them, there would be no call for the use of reason in the first place. Reason remains a tool of desire - but a tool of ALL types of desire, not just basic corporeal or greed-based desires.
being a good Christian is self-serving, material gain? well, if we’re going to be that semantically loose with the notion of “selfishness” then sure, i’ll bite the bullet and say all desires are selfish . . .
okay then that, in it’s own simple way, explains why we don’t all live in the jungle wearing dickies and eating turtle meat. it’s simply more desirable for us to live under other conditions.
I’m not a pro in that department like you, so I’ll have to take your word for it.
This is preassumed garbage. If someone wanted something and desires were in full control, reason would never come into play.
Then how can desire at one time want physical satisfaction, and another time it’s idealistic pursuits? If reason tells the superior man how to direct desire, then what really is in control?
Right. Be good and you’ll go to heaven. Unfortunately this is simply more feeble simplicity more for the mental midgets.
okay, Duality - if you’re going to continue to be deliberately insulting then i’m done with this conversation - i’ve had enough of that from you in previous threads - you can go find someone else to take your ideological angst out upon.
