The analogy starting from the sphere surface goes like this. We are 2d beings on the 2d sphere surface. So there is no actual sphere, and there is no curvature. There is just a 2d landscape with no boundary. This is all of existence and has no outside. We can’t actually move around it because there are only 2 dimensions, and moving around would need another dimension, time. But if we could move around it, we would always arrive where we started. The closed 2d landscape is infinate as in having no boundary, but has a finite size.
Then we bring this to 3d. So you pick a direction, say the direction of the Andromeda galaxy, and keep going straight. Now again, we can’t actually do that because movement requires one more dimension, but if we could do that, we would eventually arrive where we started. The closed 3d landscape is infinate as in having no boundary, but has a finite size.
Now we do what most people never do and take this to 4d. We pick a direction in space and time, and keep going straight. Now again, we can’t actually do that because we are bound by the temporal direction. But if say an 5d observer could look at the 4d closed manifold from the outside, the observer would see that we would arrive when and where we started.
This is very counterintuitive because no one ever considers the possibility that a distant point in our past and a distant point in our future could be one and the same point in time. Without any cycles, without any eternal return. It requires a completely different view of time. This would also mean that all change is an illusion globally, and it would probably mean that there must be regions somewhere where entropy is decreasing.
So this would be the closed 4d landscape, it would be infinate as in having no boundary, but would have a finite size.
Imo logically this should be the world we are actually living in, it’s the only perfectly consistent picture. That doesn’t mean that this is actually the case because logic could be irrelevant.
