Explain Yourself

Your username, that is.

I will go first.

Apaosha was the demon of dearth from ancient persian mythology. From the Zend-Avesta:

What is contemptible in this, in my view, is that Tishtriya was only able to eventually overcome apaosha through receiving enough worship and sacrifice - he needed the confidence-boost derived from the adulation of the masses. A coward.

I want to redeem the name of Apaosha; dearth can also mean rarity, scarcity - something that is unique. I prefer this spin on it …

I had also been trying to write a novel during my teenage years in which one of the characters had this name; so I am attached to it in this way too.

Anybody else care to contribute?

Haha…mine’s boring, ā€œMaytaceraā€ is my first name.

Koifer is heretic in yiddish. Since I still live in the ultra-orthodox community but don’t believe…well…that’s what I am.

I’m Scott Mears. So, I’m Smears.

Cool, I almost started a thread like this myself.

Yorick is from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. He famously holds up a skull and says:
ā€œAlas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio; a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy; he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! my gorge rises at it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know not how oft. Where be your gibes now? (Hamlet, V.i)ā€

Yorick and the skull of Yorick are most often thought of as memento mori but I also hold on to the idea of him being a jester playing a part. I feel I have very much been a jester, so to speak, for much of my life, playing the part of a believer, lying to even myself just to keep others happy. You see, I am (or was - not sure) of a boundlessly kind nature, verging on outright submissive. However, Yorick is dead, and now I’m moving forward.

The role Yorick plays in this new life is the part of the fool, of one who recognizes his utter stupidity and embraces it as per Socrates: ā€œI am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing.ā€

In terms of Tarot symbolism: ā€œThe Fool is the spirit in search of experience. He represents the mystical cleverness bereft of reason within us, the childlike ability to tune into the inner workings of the world. The sun shining behind him represents the divine nature of the Fool’s wisdom and exuberence. On his back are all the possessions he might need. In his hand there is a flower, showing his appreciation of beauty. He is frequently accompanied by a dog, sometimes seen as his animal desires, sometimes as the call of the ā€œreal worldā€, nipping at his heels and distracting him. He is seemingly unconcerned that he is standing on a precipice, apparently about to leap, engaged in the supremest act of idiocy or trust.ā€

Xunzi was the third and last of the really big Confucian scholars during the Warring States period. He held a variety of unusual views for a Confucian, such as his emphasis on the negative aspect of human nature and his admiration of hegemons. While he was officially excluded from the line of transmission during the late Tang/early Sung dynasty due to his negative views on Mencius and his iconoclastic stance on human nature.

When I joined the site, I was a great admirer of his thought, hence ā€œxunzianā€. As time has gone on, my understanding has come more in line with the orthodox/standard transmission, but the name remains.

i was stoned and im quarter kazak (but half kazakstani :stuck_out_tongue: ) so yea

I go by the name of ā€˜Mags’ in the real world, and my surname is Joseph: hence Magsj.

I just wanted an original name several years ago for my email address, but I couldn’t think of one: so, realunoriginal

Well, I had told of this here in ILP a while back, but my nick is the result of virtual flight game called F22 I played on the internet in the mid 90’s with the rank of Cmdr. I was the squad leader and the name of my flight group was called the Wild Cats. I have used this nick in chat rooms ever since. It seemed a shame to just discard.

The name I was given at birth.

Cool name, Erlir - I like… :sunglasses:

In the future, a nano bug is the kind of machine so small it could fly into your mouth and enter your blood stream to either repair or do damage to your system. This kind of nano-technology is self replicating and can be used for spying.

Cool.

Koifer that’s awesome that you have the nuts to live amongst people who consider you a heretic. I’m coming to New York for spring break. We should meet up and commit a crime against God together.

That would honestly be awesome. When are you going to be in town? I have a business trip to go on that might cut into it. I’m working over on the west coast for a while to see if I can relocate there in the fall.

If that doesn’t work out, you should come for the summer and I will definitely be in town then.

I like Pandora’s curiosity. I guess she’s an explorer in me.

My real names smushed and chopped together.

My MC name is Impious. And I chose it because 1) I’ve never heard of any other MC Impious’s and 2) because it describes me perfectly.

betw

I’m coming between the 6th and 10th of next month. My friends live in Pompton Lakes NJ, so I’ll be crashing there and taking cabs into the city all week. I need to find a place to get some bud up there!!
