Why do we fear? Why must we fear if we’re gonna overcome our greatest fears? I know some will say, ‘fear makes us stronger in the long run’ but what if we didn’t fear anything, we’d be as strong as we would if we were to overcome one of our many fears.
What I am asking is… Why do we fear? Why must we get so entangled in our deepest fears just to overcome them in the future? Is fear that essential to life?
IMHO a first approach to this question is to ask what fear actually is. There seems to be a misunderstanding of the nature of fear in the population generally.
Therapists and counsellors will tell us that clients who express their fears, are typically talking about being afraid ‘of something’. They could be afraid of a situation, of certain people, of spiders or whatever.
Whole populations can become afraid of ideas, or of any kind of possible changes, usually spurred on by the media.
We rarely hear of fear as a mental state, maybe because most people don’t like to think that they have mental states at all! This seems to come from the notion of health as an individual being alright and any problems for the individual coming from somewhere else. Only the psychologists seem to understand that fear can be projected, a mental state which the individual projects on to the world and onto the people around them (unfortunately).
The projection of fear is the stuff of individual neuroses and of mass hysterias, as one psychologist once said, “fear is very catching”.
I have been told that I am too sensitive to fear in others, which is certainly true, but it has been helpful to understand this. I am often with people who are blatantly fearful, but if I mentoned this to them they would become angry. It is part of the taboo that we don’t say ‘I am afraid’ in anything but the most extreme or intimate circumstances.
So my initial answer is that fear is a mental state which we are afraid of.
Isn’t fear actually a very important fact that makes us human? If we wouldn’t fear anything, what would we be then? Some kind of roboters raging around doing everything…
For me fear is strongly connected to self-conciousness in itself and caring about the individum (that you are). Fear let’s us rethink and reflect again decisions we’ve made or we’re going to make. It’s essential to the comprehension of ourselves, of our behaviour, of hour selves.
I wouldn’t want to live without fear. I think it is always necessary, you have to work with it. That’s what your mind is for. Think about the reasons of fear, just think
(Okay, maybe sometimes you should just have to “do” things without thinking, like bungee jumping for instance , but… hmm… )
The point is I can’t see that we would be really better-off if we could completely switch out our fear. I think it is good as it is, that if you want to overcome it, goddamn overcome it, but that has to be your own job. The fear isn’t there for nuts. If you really want to overcome it, you have to make it on your own (in a way as a mental act)…
You know what ,lion and tiger does not fear.Look at their eyes.
We fear because we don’t truly know about things,an ignorance.
For instance, you walk to a new classroom , you don’t know what are those students think of you.You 'll be paranoia till you talk with them ,then you’ll see them ,so you relax.
Moreover, when you get to a dark room, you 'll fear till you turn on a light.
