Since I value everyone’s opinion very highly I thought that I would ask for some feedback.
Do you think that animation looks fairly smooth and of a good quality?

It’s a bit rough on the turns whenever the back of it is about to go full on with the viewer.
Overall it looks good, except for one small problem; the background textures around the spinning object shift in a distracting way. It looks like the box around the TIE fighters when they attack the 'Falcon in the original Star Wars. Not terrible, but there’s a clearly defined box around the spinning “S” object that messes up the smooth look.
Also your spriting is off … you’re lighting angle, via the background texture is going from bottom to top, and left to right … your spriting starts on more darkened side. Just an observation.
Yeah, that’s just a quick background, but I’m not sure why it’s doing the box thing.
Also, I think I have solution for the turn look. I will post changes.
Thanks.
Here are some changes.
It’s funny, the spinning seems a little haulting, but maybe because it’s here. It’s not doing it when I test it in a browser.
Yeah it rotates almost as if it’s weighted at one end. On here at least
Ad, because the ball is not cut exactly in half and forms a slight “C†shape (not D), the straight face is in a different position when facing left, than it is when facing right.
This give the rotation an awkward, weight-shift feel (regardless of how smooth the revolutions are).
If you haven’t access to 3D software, then I’d do it in Flash where you can use “onion skins” (to see through each graphic). This way you could get perfect placement. Flash’s “tweening” may also smooth out the rotation too.
Yes, I see what you mean.
I, in fact, am using flash, but I decided to insert blank frames between each image to slow the animation down a bit. I will try removing them and see what happens.
Thanks for the input!
One of my goals is to make sure that the letter gets seen.
I think that this is smoother.
That’s much smoother, but you still have a couple of frames where the profile of the ball changes shape slightly. I think the shadow could be reduced in size a little too.
The stage where it is now is good and would suit most people but… if you want to go professional, you will need to use Flash’s “onion skins”, “shape hinting” (if needed) and “tweening” to make it perfect.
km,
The shadow on the ground is only there for “here” and isn’t going to be used.
I agree about the shape changes. I am aware of the other things that you mentioned, but what is “shape hinting,” if you can talk a little about it or just mention how to access the function that would be great.
Thanks again.
KM is our resident graphics expert…make good use of him.
Yes, very thoughtful of him to help out.
I really shouldn’t have mentioned ‘shape hinting’ here because it’s unlikely you will need it for this example – it’s a pretty basic shape change you’re dealing with.
But when you want to tween one shape into another – and the tween doesn’t work well – you can use ‘shape hinting’ to help it move the way you want.
You can access shape hints thru Modify>Shapes>Add Shape Hint which will dump an A on both the first and last shapes of your tween.
You then move the llittle ‘A’ symbol on the first shape, go to the second shape and move the second A there too. This tells point A (on the first graphic) to morph into point A on the second graphic. You can then repeat ‘Add Shape Hint’ to dump a B on both shapes then a C, D etc up to Z.
Again, I stress that its not likely to be needed in this example (unless the tween causes problems - which I doubt) but its good to know with your other graphics. It enables the change to morph more realistically from one image into another.
I think this thread is all just a lot of shameless bragging. I can’t even get my avatar to work. No, km… don’t even offer. You haved fixed it four times now for me. Ah, my right brain is far too evolved THUS making my entire left side weak and highly unmotivated.
