Female Poets

I need more women in my life. Any ideas? I have a ‘Ariel’ by Plath and a collection by ‘Emily Dickinson’. I was looking for some good female poets…there is an overwhelming abundance of male poets out there, they are almost impossible to escape. If anyone knows of any strudy female poets (with tender thighs) let me know.

‘Plath come up for breath and breathe!
Turn off the self-indulgent gas of cryptic woe!
I could have shown you a good time in God time
And our shadows would have trembled
wielding our power tools in a garden of Eden…’

I think this is good;

I wish I could remember the exact name of one of the first poetry books I ever received. I think it was called Three Russian Poets and consisted of the writings of three Russian women.

It blew me away. I read and read and read it for years – then lost it. It’s probably out of print and there’s no way I’d remember the womens’ names. My previous attempts to find it failed miserably.

I often wonder if I would love it as much now or whether I have moved on? Anyway, sorry I couldn’t help Colin, just reminiscing aloud but I suggest you check out some Russian women poets and let us know if you find anything wonderful.

I just looked in a compilation book, and the “Poette” with the best poem was Ella Wheeler Wilcox with “Solitude”. The first lines are famous:

Laugh, and the world laughs with you,
Weep, and you weep alone;

Another one to mention is Emily Brontë.

Christina Rossetti
