FIFA World Cup 2026

Hahahaha thanks

Argentina go through. They will meet Switzerland on Sunday. 2am UK time.

Switzerland scraped through, after winning a penalty shoot out against Columbia.

Last 8:

France v Morocco - 9th July
Spain v Belgium - 10th July
Norway v England - 11th July
Argentina v Switzerland 12th July

Isn’t it fair to say that Argentina also scraped through? I didn’t watch the game, but the stories are galling.

K: and I got France, Spain, England and Argentina to win…

Yes, it’s fair to say Argentina did scrape through. It’s also fair to say that one or two folks who did watch the game thought that Egypt were extremely hard done by! “One rule for one team and one rule for another,” was a statement being bandied about.
I wonder what you heard that was so galling?

That’s what I would go for, PK.

That would leave the semi final as:

England v Argentina
Spain v France

What are the chances of a repeat of the '22 final?

Red card administered. I said: “Wow, that’s a lot of power. That’s terrible.”

Vive les bleus.

Magnanimous ‘Liberty uniting the world’, statue givers. They don’t just give them to anyone. Just those in a position to set an example. That’s not to say that the receivers don’t set an example. It’s just a little unfortunate to say that, sometimes, depending on who’s at the helm, they do not set a good example - a shining example. On a hill.

By the by. France 2 Morocco.
Great news for those who love statues. You must visit France, the French are just so giving.
Any way, how long did Vietnam take?
Vietnam, Sir? The one where we lost 58,000 young Americans? Where 2-4 million Vietnamese died?

Thirteen, and it wasn’t even a foul.
Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.
The signal has been lost.

We apologise for the temporary delay in transmission. We hope to get the signal back as soon as possible.

Three children sharing a bicycle. On the pavement! You have never witnessed such a furore.
It’s just one thing after another.

For goodness sake…

For no other reason. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

:joy: Sport now, and it’s over to Jeremy for the latest sports headlines. Jeremy?

Spain through to the semi-final, where they will face the team representing France.

For goodness sake.

Cut! What’s wrong? Was it something that was said?

What happened? Was it something that you read?

I have absolutely no idea what happened there, but I believe we can go back to Jeremy. Jeremy?

Sorry about that. No idea what happened. Spain are through to the semi-final, setting up a mouth-watering tie with France. Many are calling it the unofficial world cup final. Everything we have seen, thus far, has shown us that these are the two best teams left in the competition.

Of course, that’s not everyone’s view. Norway, England, Argentina and Switzerland will have something to say on the subject. Connoisseurs of the game, however, are saying…

Jeremy, we’ve lost you.

For goodness sake.

You must forgive my frivolity, my jollity, my unbridled joy.

I watch a game of football, and I am once again the boy

Mbappe! For goodness sake!

That’s what you meant! :joy:

Took a while, but I got there in the end! :+1:

Good call, PK. :+1:

OK, tomorrow is the first game, France and Spain…
and on Wednesday is England and Argentina…
and these games are with serious topflight football
teams… my last set of predictions were spot on…
and all I have now is just two games left…

After much, much consideration, I am going with…

France in the first game and England in the second game…

I think Argentina will, finally, run out of luck and France is good
enough they can win without any need for luck…

and my choice for the final game, France vs England… is going to
be ENGLAND… Their one and only world cup was in 1966 vs
West Germany… and we all remember that game?.. of course
I was 7 years old at the time and never heard of football/soccer…

and there we go…

You know, I am looking at the squads here, and I am starting to understand what the original situation probably was with the Paraguayan lady.

Look at the names for 90% or more of the teams for England and France: how many of them were even born in the country they are playing for?

Total number of players born outside the nation they represent.

France: 3
England: 1
Spain: 1
Argentina: 2

I have a feeling you could have easily found that out for yourself!

Interested to learn how that justifies the vile, racist remarks made by the Paraguayan bigot - you may feel free to call her a ‘lady’.

It said: “The brute didn’t even learn to write; instead of mother’s milk, he sucked on coconuts, and the most educated thing he heard were chimpanzees.”

Bold Kropotkin! I like your reasoning for the semi-final matches. Let’s imagine England defeat Argentina. Trying to be positive, however, given all that we have seen over the past 4-5 weeks, I am struggling to give England much of a chance against either France or Spain.
Indeed, if it should happen that they get through to face France, there is the ‘fear’ that the French would give us a good tonking!

We’ll see!

Well, the first question is how verbatim that quote is, and how liberal the translation.

She was just probably using gutter speak to express frustration at a French team where everybody has non French names. It feels unfair.

“Here is ‘exactly’ what she said, based on verified reporting.” :man_shrugging:

“Verified reporting” is not a source.
