Finite existance

This is my first post here I have been interested in philosophy for quite some time and I figured I’d ask a few questions I have been toying with for a bit. Small introduction I’m 18 years old and will be attending ASU next year.

As humans the things we see and believe all have a finite existence, with a defined beginning and end to all that we encounter in our lives. We see birth as a start with death as an end and the concept, at least for me, of something that is infinite remains elusive. With this said my question is one asked for hundreds of years, where did we come from? I don’t mean on a personal level or even a global level but on a universal level. Due to our beliefs of infinite vs. finite existences we must believe that at the birth of our universe there was something however, that also means that prior to the birth of our universe there was nothing, no matter no space nothing.

The one problem with this theory is humans cannot comprehend the creation of something from nothing. Through thousands of years we have turned to proposed solutions like religion to explain the creation of life through a higher power or deity. These two mental walls instilled in my mind as well as many others prevent us from thinking too far outside the box. Here we are given to prospected ideas, for this purpose I’ll choose the theory of ‘The Big Bang’ where the universe was created by a massive explosion beyond comprehension. From my best understanding explosions come from reactions on an atomic level where two or more elements or compounds mix to form a violent reaction. So what two elements could have existed prior to the big bang and where did these come from.

Any thoughts or opinions on the ideas of a finite versus a infinite universe are greatly appreciated, I’ll be checking back and forth throughout the day.

Reality is a delusion. Quit believing in it.

LOL
jeez that’s no introduction.

Bright-shadow, Welcome to ILP.

Your question is a fickle one. Many philosophers have pitted mans finite existence against the percieved infiniteness of the uniuverse and concluded we are a meaningless inevitability.

I believe the big bang element you are thinking of is hydrogen, but that’s not fact.

The unknown answers of questions like “where do we come from?” and “What’s the nature of infinity” are what give philosophy its diverse sections.

You will find theists (a theist is basically someone who believes in a creation theory of the universe, usually religious), and then you will find existentialists (key word is “exist”). these philosophers focus on existence and the “why?” type questions.

Rene descartes is someone you will have to read if you are taking basic philosophy.

By doubting everything he thought he knew and starting from the one thing that he did know, “i think, therefore i am”, he began to logically determine things that he could be absolutely sure of. He wondered if this world was like the matrix (late 16th century i think) and that some evil devil placed us here to some sick end. He used logic and doubt to try and come to an ultimate conclusion about his existence.

His problem was that the churches influences led him to biasly work toward a proof for god. Also much of his work was logically flawed.

Another type of philosopher (the boring kind) are nihilists (short for “i believe in nothing”).

Nihilists will tell you either “who gives a shit” or “We’re too stupid to know”.

Socratese might be best known for saying “all i know is that i know nothing”. (also boring and nihilistic)

There are a few anti-theists lurking around, and theres also a small minority of the manically depressed.

Stay here a while and throw around some of those questions and you will get different answers.

Realunoriginals answer comes from the fact that he doesn’t believe in god, he doesn’t believe in the single universe theory, and he doesn’t even believe that the things we percieve (colors light and objects) do not remotely reflect what actually exist.

He’s like an existentialist with the attitude of a nihilist.

As for me, i say there are more important questions. like What affects my life? and , How should we cope with life?

The answer to the great questions usually dont change a thing

You have much to learn pupil!

Thank you for this contribution on my thoughts Wonderer, although it is quite mistaken in certain areas.

Oh yeah, welcome to the board Brightest_Shadow… :sunglasses:

Edit: Hmm, how do I delete a double post…

Welcome shadow, don’t mind the nihilists, their bark is worse than their bite.

haha, and their bark as long drawn out echo.

Greetings Brightest_Shadow:
I believe the finite is a temporary manifestation of our collective eternal consciousness.
It appears to me consciousness is eternal or ‘always present’ but not infinite as it moves
in a repetitive cyclical manner.

Hope you enjoy my philosophy.
Cheers!

I have not yet begun to bark–or bite for that matter… :evilfun:
