Foucault and Nietzsche

Nietzsche’s “will to power” inspired Foucault’s “will to knowledge” but how did the connections between the two philosophers established?

“Will to power” is both a term “will to power” I guess first appeared in the “The Gay Science” written (1882), and a work “Will to Power” editioned (1901).

That’s makes it difficault to found out if Foucault read the book “Will to Power” or “The Gay Science” or another work by Nietzsche?

Nietzsche’s philosophy must get into Foucault’s philosophy in some way, but how? Which works by Nietzsche did Foucault actually read?

I found it very educating to understand philosopher’s in the dialogue they have to each other. Through a philosopher’s understanding of a related philosopher you self get things understood.

The relations between Foucault and Nietzsche had my attention for a long time now.

Hoping for answers…

Paideia,

You might want to read Foucault’s essay, “Nietzsche, Geneology and History” thefoucauldian.co.uk/ngh.pdf

Thank you for the essay.

In the essay I see the works by Nietzsche Focualt make references to, and I’ve been counting how many times he do so:

It seems Foucault get most influences from, in following ordered by frequence 1. On the Genealogy of Moral, 2. The Gay Science, 3. The Dawn, 4. Beyond Evil and Good, 5. Human, All too Human and 6. Twilight

Can you say the above Nietzsche works are the most important or the most representative for Nietzsche’s philosophy or may it just be Foucault’s specific preferences for Nietzsche shown, in the essay.

Paideia,

I’m sorry, but it’s been some time since I studied Foucault in any depth, and your question only brought this essay to mind for me. If you come across a sense though in which you feel that specific works have shaped, please do share because I would be interested.
