If I’m going to cross the line then I generally go way across it. I mean, if you’re going to get into trouble for saying something, you might as well say what you actually mean…
That sort of thing is different for each case. It depends upon the persons involved, How well you know them, what your relationship is, etc… each case can be different and should not always be handled the same way. Do you want to burn your bridge or keep it intact? Will you ever have dealings with this person or people that may know this person?
without knowing specifics its hard to give you social advice on lines, since relationships change those lines.

Question them. Question their motives, their ideas, their actions, their feelings, and crush them with their own poor judgment by making them feel like a total idiot for thinking the things they do.
