The assassination of a Hamas leader threatens wider war
Ismail Haniyeh, who led Hamas’s political operations from Qatar, was assassinated in Tehran after he attended the inauguration of Iran’s newly elected president. Both Iran and Hamas accused Israel of carrying out the attack, though it is not yet clear how Haniyeh was killed, and Israel has not commented on his death. Hours before the assassination, Israel killed a senior member of Hezbollah in an airstrike in a Beirut suburb.
By killing Hamas’ chief negotiator, Israel has undermined any possibility of a cease-fire in Gaza. Netanyahu’s tenure as prime minister depends on keeping the war going. This act ensures that it will.
Why does killing the leader of Hamas’s political operations undermine that? It might even speed it up… It’s not obvious to me why your conclusion would be correct. What’s the argument?
By blowing up the negotiator, Netanyahu blew up the negotiation. He wants to hang on to power.
If he’s the head of hamas political operations, surely his role is far bigger than just “the negotiator”, right?

Holy fuck this forum is crap. I try to edit my post to correct the spelling of senile and when i log in to reply, I’m taken to the first page of the thread rather than the last… then i run out of patience tryna scroll through all the shit so i go back to the home page, reclick the thread so i can get to the last post, my own. Then i try again to edit the post and I’m told I’m tryna edit it too soon or some shit. So i go to discard the edit and it deletes my post.

In 2023, former Human Rights Watch director Kenneth Rothsaid that his organization had long refrained from interpreting the reality on the ground in terms of apartheid as long as there was a chance the peace process would succeed. My concern is that a two-state solution, if Hamas (aka Iran’s proxy war) is not ended, will result in a worse sort of apartheid (apartness, segregation) than existed in South Africa. In Israel, there was coexistence in places like:

In the U.S. we have “united” states. Ideally. Would a “two state” solution in Israel even be close to our level of united? Would there be coexistence?

Israel is applying an even more extreme version of apartheid in the Palestinian territories than experienced in South Africa before 1994, Pretoria told the world’s top court.
“We as South Africans sense, see, hear and feel to our core the inhumane discriminatory policies and practices of the Israeli regime as an even more extreme form of the apartheid that was institutionalised against black people in my country,” said Vusimuzi Madonsela, South Africa’s ambassador to the Netherlands, where the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is based, on Tuesday.
An unprecedented 52 countries are taking the stand at the ICJ, which has been asked to provide a non-binding “advisory opinion” on the legal implications of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.
“It is clear that Israel’s illegal occupation is also being administered in breach of the crime of apartheid… It is indistinguishable from settler colonialism. Israel’s apartheid must end,” said Madonsela.
He said South Africa had a “special obligation” to call out apartheid wherever it occurs and ensure it is “brought to an immediate end.”
The case is separate from a high-profile case brought by Pretoria against Israel for alleged genocide during its current offensive in Gaza.
In that case, the ICJ ruled that Israel should do everything in its power to prevent genocidal acts in Gaza and allow in humanitarian aid.
The hearings kicked off on Monday with three hours of testimony from Palestinian officials, who accused the Israeli occupiers of running a system of “colonialism and apartheid”.
Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al Maliki urged the judges to call for an end to the occupation “immediately, totally and unconditionally.”
