LivingDeadGirl is not allowed to play.

Here’s your one clue: The story inspired me to look up the word ‘thews’ in the dictionary.

A character called Thews, perhaps…

Robert Jordan

Ucci at least give us the genre

Aww…I’m not allowed to play?

Bummer.

I said fiction, isn’t that a genre? I’ll give another clue in the morning if nobody has it, but your prize* won’t be as good!
(Robert Jordan is wrong, BTW)

*Some restrictions apply, see first post for details.

conan

Last I checked…Conan didn’t write any books. :sunglasses:

I’m just gonna go out on a limb and say Geoffrey Chaucer.

Something by Clark Ashton Smith…?

(I was gonna go for Robert E. Ilivedwithmemum Howard too…)

Imagine someone not knowing what “thews” were, tch. :unamused:

Terry Brooks

That’s the line I was working down…

true, the thews threw me…

my new guess is “flat tire repair” by hans and frans…

Hello F(r)iends,

Is it Terry Goodkind?
Is it Terry Brooks?
Is it Terry McGarry?

Does the first name start with Terry?

Edit: I noticed that some other people also listed Terry Brooks… for the um… record, I said it first.

I just want to let you all know that Terry Brooks is awesome. I’ve been a major fan of his books for a long time and I own every one of his books excepting the Magical Kingdom for Sale series, Hook, and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. I think it was for my thirteenth birthday that my mom sent him a letter, telling him of my interest in fiction writing and how I was a fan, etc, hoping maybe to get a signed letter in return or some such. I received for my birthday a signed copy of Sometimes the Magic Works: Lessons from a Writing Life, and a short letter.

Jackal?
Jackal?!?
Is it a jackal?
It’s a Jackal!!
Jackal?!?

Well, the answer was Robert E Howard- the guy who wrote all the ‘Conan’ stuff. I’m surprised Impentient didn’t say that, after guessing what it was…I know nobody got it, but I have a feeling nobody is going to get closer. So yay Impenitent.

Someone else want to do it?

So, what does “thews” refer to and was it from the Conan series or one of his other books?

I guess it was the “every desperate ounce of verve and thew” line. I can’t recall the story, but I recall the phrase. Although my guess came too late.

Myself, I’m reading Lovecraft at the moment.

Always a good choice.

Currently reading C.S. Lewis.

the screwtape letters is fun
