Thanksgiving is the holiday where we celebrate the lie we told ourselves about the genocide of the people indigenous to this land. They gave us corn and turkey, we gave them smallpox and booze. Next thing you know…we’re having the macy’s parade in times square after the whole trail of tears thing.
The thing that Thanksgiving really signifies, in it’s modern form at least…is the beginning of the Christmas shopping seasons. The stores all use tricky advertising to make people show up in hoards and they stay open all night and have absurd sales but no matter what people always spend more money than they have blowing up credit cards to try and impress one another. The stores will discount a television that everyone wants, or a computer, but they’ll only have 2 in stock, but then send out 1 million flyers informing everyone of the amazing deal and stating that the store opens at 5 am and to hurry not to miss the deal!
It’s always a scam. You might as well order it offline any time of the year for the same price. “Black Friday” is the day of the year where you can go into the local store and get the deal that you can always get online. Shoppers who do not use the internet will wake up at 4am to get there on time. 99% of them will be disappointed.
Oh yeah don’t forget having to eat a bunch of mediocre food and pretend that you think it’s amazing. Gotta love that part. Who the fuck likes stuffing? Why is Turkey the driest meat on Earth? Potato salad? Fucking disgusting.
Gods! You all must have depressing families… Thanksgiving and Christmas has always been about family and fun for us. Its the one time of year I regret not living closer to my families.
Xmas is for children. When you grow up you can never recapture the magic. Until (presumably) you have kids of your own, which I don’t, yet, though of course I hope to one day.
The magic is a celebration of love for family and friends, celebrating with the joy of being loved and loving. The end of year celebrations are for all not just kids.
Being so very far away from the people I love makes this a difficult time of year for me. Since I was a kid the holiday season has always been exciting because of all the time I got to spend with my family, the “magic” of that doesn’t disappear when you get older. I’ve found that, if anything, it becomes even more important.
It’s also true, though, that Christmas is more about kids and presents (ugh), New Year’s is the “adult holiday”.
Aaah Blurry, you need a friend Christmas. Present giving and receiving is great fun. Secret Santa is what we would do. You buy only one gift for your secret person, buy some drink and food to bring and a great time is had. The magic is sharing but, hells yea! New Year’s paaarrrtttyyyy!!!
I’ll be having thanksgiving with some friends and their family. Yes, I know for everybody here it is impossible to imagine somebody like me has friends.
I do try to go out and socialize it’s just that I’m no good at it.
Most of my little Burque family o’ friends will be with their own families for the holidays, and of course I get invited along but sometimes I just don’t feel like being the odd man out. I am going over to a friend’s house for Thanksgiving this year, but I’m not keen on intruding on anyone’s family Christmas celebrations this year, just makes me miss my own family more.
It’ll be all good, though Was talking to a friend at work yesterday who doesn’t have his daughter on Christmas and all of his family stuff is taking place around rather than on the day, so it sounds like we might get together at his place and have some drinks. Would be better than sitting in my apartment watching Paul again.
It will be the happiest Holiday Season ever, my wife, who miraculously survived the eye of the hurricane, in the Phillippines has thank God survived it and will be here by Thanksgiving for gobble gobble.
Wishing everybody on the board, on board or not, bored or not. A sincerely holiday cheer.
Hey obe! That is great news. I just learned that my stepdad, his wife and their 4 kids survived it too. They live in Palo, Leyte Tacloban. We have been worried sick. He made their house like a bunker so the storm did not worry us as much as the hell afterwards. An old man, young petite wife and 4 little kids. They seem to have money, food etc… to the have nots they would be a target. They have an arsenal and good friends with them as it turns out. Yes, the holidays will be happier.
