Has science sold out to capitalism

Has science sold out to capitalism.

What do you think of this parable by the Indian poet writer Tagore

KARTILEYA: the merchant is now the king- the warrior caste is now a soldier in the merchants service AND THE LEARNED CASTE IS A SLAVE TO TO THE MERCHANTS FOR HIS MONEY

by implication the only way the learned can get his money from the merchant is by useing knowledge the way the merchants wants -ie to make more money for the merchant

so has the scientist sold his soul the the merchant and does the merchants bidding

Like most poetry, I think that parable – as you have presented it – is so vague as to make it meaningless.

Who cares??? Let the two of them do as they please.

I have a better question:
Does the scientist interact with the merchant under the threat of violence or vice versa?
If the answer is NO, let them do as they please and write better poetry.

I think there’s alot of competition for research grants. Is that what you mean?

depends if you get your grant from the goverment or a company. I guess selling out would be doing research you didn’t really care about just to make money.

So again it comes down to the individual. Some will sell out some won’t.

Gee, my guess is that the vast majority of people in the entire world hate their job and go to work solely for the money.
Only losers are the ones singing “Hi Ho! Hi Ho!” in the morning.

Yes.

It’s not always so simple.

I just heard this npr story yesterday:

marketplace.publicradio.org/disp … 2/genome_q

This guy was turned down multiple times for gov’t funding for his radical new approach to genome mapping, so he turned to private funding

I think for the most part scientists become scientists and stay scientists because they are interested in science and knowledge. Money is just necessary for them to pursue their scientific goals in our capitalist society, and I think if you asked most of them, they would much prefer to have nothing to do with funding
