Have any of you been falsely accused of plagiarism?

My wife saw a play called “Third” recently, and the main character was falsely accused of plagiarism. It had a major impact on this character and I am curious about your experiences.

i’ve been accused of cheating, reading ahead, plagarizing, cheating off other students when they infact cheated off me, and even being “an asshole”.

teachers never liked me because i was the kid who asked questions. have you ever been in an audience where the speaker fails miserably to engage the crowd and is left with an awkward attempt getting your attention?

i was the only kid who ever broke that odd silence… they took me for grantid you see.

in grade 4 i corrected my math teacher more times then he corrected me, and he gave me less than perfect out of spite or something.

unless your a diamond in the rough you don’t have to worry about serious plagarism accusations. if you are indeed accused you can disprove any claim (that is if you DIDN"T plagarize)

one time however my teacher was convinced that i plagarized because i had went out of my way to increase my vocabulary; he said there is no way i would use “those” words.

my discretion resulted his unshakable belief that i slapped the who thing onto a word document from the internet. (he even said it was too neatly typed :-s :-k  )

it did feel bad that he didnt believe me. it felt like an insult mostly. but in the end i said “fine, fail me. but i still didnt plagarize”. which i think may of half convinced him but he still failed me.

for the rest of the year i purposely used needlessly large words in almost every piece of work i handed in.

he stopped reading my work after about 2 months and just started putting a check

then again other teachers have proclaimed me a genius infront of the entire class; just get to know ur teacher

Never! No-one would dare! :imp:

When i wrote my first short story my teacher was so impressed with it she thought i had lifted if from some author. She even asked my mother if this was true. Mom said no, i did it myself, and suddenly i was hailed as having “a talent”

Hi guys,

So far everyone seems to have escaped relatively unharmed. Great!

My wife was surprised to find out that I too was falsely accused of plagiarism. It happened at the University of Minnesota, but it wasn’t pushed so far that I might have been expelled.

The plus side of the University of Minnesota is that, with about 50,000 students, no one actually knows what’s happening to anyone else.

Thanks Ed

it’s like you described my school experience, minus your plagiarism experience. teachers were worse to me, they constantly conspired to have me expelled and provocated me :stuck_out_tongue:
i had been accused of plagiarism falsely once( i had intended to cheat but hadn’t in the end, simply coz i hadn’t up till then so i didn’t) but my study notes fell behind my chair after the exam finished( they were initially study notes). LOL this sounds like one of those “Law drama” series situations. in the end nothing happened tho

My classmates were always copying my ideas and concepts, but they never did it as good as mine: so I didn’t care! my work always yielded top marks/praise from my tutors…

Hi Magsj,

My story is much different than yours.

I am at best a mediocre writer. Having entered the University I was required to take 3 classes in freshman English. It took me six tries to complete those classes.

At one point I became annoyed my with one of my teachers for making the claim that the object of freshman English was to teach us how to communicate.

We were told to read a book, call it classic one, and write a paper on it. As this was a reasonably liberal institution, we given the option to write a report on any subject that we liked.

My report was on the ignorance and lies of freshman English teachers. I wrote that they were teaching us a form and not actual communication. Most of the text was in fragments, and the explicatives were not deleted.

The following day the teacher pulled me aside and showed me the F I had received. I asked him if he did not understand my paper, and he said he did. I asked why I did not get a better grade, and he said that he did not like the subject matter. (At least there was no pretense at rationality).

Our next task was to read classic two, and write a report on it. Again sticking to his liberal roots we were told that we could write a report on any other subject that we liked.

This time I wrote a report on an application of an inverse function theorem to time and history. I rigorously developed both the application and the proof of the theorem and dutifully concluded that there was a subdomain of history where time could be written as a function of history. This was all done within the frame work of the required English form that we were taught.

The coup de grace was that I wrote the 500 word paper in 3 sentences.

I am reasonably certain that he did not understand any significant portion of the text. His form not actually guarantying communication.

This time I got a C+, along with an accusation that I copied this from a technical history journal. Even today none of his actions makes any sense to me.

Tutors get threatened by their students and also plagiarise their work, so watch out for that.

I’ve never been accused of plagiarism. Perhaps my work was never good enough.

I think Saul Kripke once was. He probably really did it, but just had to many powerful academics on his side preventing him from taking the fall.

with apology to the blonde cliche, one year a very attractive blonde sat beside me. she also copied off me through every test.

at the end of the year she had a better mark than me when she knew less than half of what i did, and what she did know, was lifted from my tests…

conclusion. the same idea may be seen completly differently when comming from different people… even though it is a fallacy.

Do you think you did her any favours in the long wrong, by letting her cheat off you? :-k
