Because a Prius can be made to sound really cool if you choke the muffler, it has a really cool name, it actually goes over 50mph which is very important if you are crossing Texas. And if it is in bad shape you can set it in your yard turn it on and let the smoke kill mosquitos which is very important if you live near water or swamps. You don’t have to remember to plug it in after you have been drinking or are really tired and if you forget to pay your electric bill you can still use your prius to go borrow money from Mom and Dad.
Kris,
OK, but they make shoes too. You could walk quite a ways for 40 grand… ![]()
The all electric may not be quite ready for the living-in-the-sticks people.
The idea is to catch the majority of commuters (less than 25 mi one way) and the dozen trips a week to Quickie Mart and the hardware store… The car mentioned in the article has a small backup gas engine to run a battery charger, so park it in the yard and pour some citronnella in the gas while you’re charging the batteries. ![]()
Oh yea sure but it sounds like a wussy… Hon, you need noise to sound tough in a prissy little car. Electric motors just don’t cut it for the illegal drags and chick catching.
I can’t remember which company, but they’ve already thought of that. They have a sound system that will produce whatever engine noise you would like.
Still, they will never produce the small block chevy coupled to a Corvette 4 speed at the top of second gear. That’s the sweetest sound in the world… - and damned likely to produce the most speeding tickets…

yes but will it cream jeans?
Sorry, crude but so true… ![]()
electric cars have such powerful engines you’d be lucky if they’d cream corn…

Kris! Shame one you!
Actually, that was up to the girl sitting beside me, but I ain’t talking…

And this is just one of several electric cars capable of similar performance. The problem is cost. My little Chevy produced low 11’s in the quarter and cost about, in today’s equivalent, maybe 10 grand. That would just about buy the hood ornament on one of these new electric go-fasts.
But the technology is there. As demand increases, prices will come down and we should see that all-electric commuter vehicle in the 30 grand range within the next five years…
Creamed corn is delicious.
Cars here used to be extensions of the person driving them. This may not be so in the rest of the world but, here in the USA Cars must adapt to each driver’s personality there must be room for extra toys. Young men and women need sex appeal in a car. Young families need stabilty and room, middle age need reflective cars, Seniors need bumper cars. And then all manner of cars in between that appeal to tastes… Darn cars all look alike on the outside now… I would not spend 30 g for a car that I cannot find in a packed parking lot. But that is just my little taste. The new Jags make me gag and sad, they ruined them. They now look no different then any other matchbox car. :-& No reflection no sex appeal , no personality. Its like they are made for Euros. Cars now are so sad. We have been subverted by Euro standards and lack of fun. ![]()
Kris,
I see you in a '57 Chevy Apache 5 window pickup with side racks. ![]()
Seniors need bumper cars.
Watch it, kid…

Cars with personality sounds good, but we’re at the stage of just getting from point A to point B without taking out a second mortgage on the house. Maybe at some point they’ll produce niche cars, but now ain’t the time. There will always be the toys, but not affordable for most of us.
Oh please with a little conversion and a lot less money you can drive a classic gas guzzler and eliminate the gas guzzling without sacrificing a whole lot on performance. There are engines and kits that you can purchase for classic stylish cars. Any reputable mechanic can do the installs.

You mean like the above angel? I will take it, love it and give it a great home, but, I actually prefer :

My uncle found an old '57 GMC Suburban. We turned it into a towing rig (BIG trailer). Put a 389 Pontiac engine in it. Didn’t go very fast, but the thing would climb a wall if you could stick to it. ![]()
