So, I’m not sure what the “mashed potato” looks like. I recall the B52s mentioning it, but that’s about it.

Check this site out, it’s funny in and of itself, but it does explain the dance.
It’s how my Mum dances. One thing you’ll notice from the average dance originating in/from countries with cold or temperate climates is the lack of lateral or “rolling” hip movements. Not a lot of movement in the midsection, either. I think it may have something to do with having to wear shoes so often…
