Hobbes and human rationality

Hi there,

I have a question for those who are intrigued by Hobbes and his…well…“interesting” concept of the Leviathan.

The question I’d like to pose is given the nature that Hobbes outlines, ie. as humans we are naturally self preserving beings that ar emotivated by self-interest alone, would any human with as much rationalism as he assumes enter into a contract as such that he describes?

My thought is no. The reason for this is the person can rationally assume that whatever happens in the society there will come a time when his personal well being is directly affected. If that time comes he’d have to attempt and escape the Leviathan. Thus as a rational being is he sure that his well being will be preserved for good?

What do ppl think?
