How Can An Atheist Say----

anything about a god.
atheism====no god.
If there is no god you have nothing to say.
The theists are the ones that can discuss a god.
No god is no god.

turtle,
An atheist can say, “I believe there is no God”. One cannot say, “There is no God.” When I was just a kid, my dad took my sister and me to see the grave of atheist Chester Bedell (google). Bedell had claimed that if there was a God, may his grave be infested with snakes. The statue of him by the grave portrays him with his foot on the Bible. Grave diggers claim they had a difficult time even opening the grave because of snakes. On our trip to the grave, we noticed holes everywhere. I didn’t see any snakes. The holes may have been made by moles, but the local urban myth is fun to read about now.

people who don’t believe that unicorns exist still write books about unicorns.
how can someone who doesn’t believe in unicorns say something about unicorns?

Your conclusion doesn’t quite follow from your premise here. If there is no God an atheist has everything to say. Otherwise, an atheist can talk about God the same way he does any fairy tale.

I don’t believe in ghosts. Should I be barred from any/all discussions pertaining to ghosts?

Atheists don’t think they’re talking to God, turtle. They’re talking to theists or about theists regarding belief in God. Atheists believe in belief in God.

xzc I said they were talking about god not talking to god. It looks to me like they are trying to prove there is no god. Their belief is there is no god.
So if there is no god then their case is closed.
All they are saying to the theist is that their belief in gods is false. Why dont they just remain quiet?

Remain quiet? turtle-dove…come on, dude.

Why do religious people talk about god? To spread what they believe to be “truth”. Why should atheists keep “truth” to themselves?

but savy why do atheists need to argue with theists.
there is no god. case closed. let the theists talk about their gods.

Anytime I discuss god I am discussing the concepts around god, not the existence. Given the wide range of gods that have been worshipped through time, the concepts of that worship are really the only thing of interest to me. The actual existence is basically irrelevant. It’s pointless to discuss existence, people just dig in to their predetermined arguments and stop having an open conversation.

Because the theists belief in God is not inert? Because on the basis of that belief he’ll enact laws, go to war, allocate my atheist tax dollars to stupid shit, teach a new generation of kids a bunch of bullshit about the natural world, and even cut my atheist head off in some parts of the world.

You fucking remain quiet.

xzc–now you are talking. i will remain quiet if my head is going to be cut off. the atheist must be more clever. they are trying to attack at the point of greatest strength of the god people. you can redefine god. you must gain political power. but you are not going to do it by saying there is no god.

And what if a theist attempts to proselytize an atheist? I suppose his answer should be something like: “Sorry. Just can’t. Case closed.”

Not “false”, just negative. They probably don’t remain quiet because of theistic babble like this.

redefining words doesn’t change what people believe, man.
that’s not philosophy haha.

if you tell me you have to take a shit, but then i redefine shit as yogurt…ur still gonna have to go to the bathroom man.

Does your God not look kindly upon martyrs?

They’ve had to be in the past for fear of banishment or death. Something which doesn’t exist isn’t quite worth dying over is it? What’s your excuse?

Which is what?

Why would an atheist redefine God? Atheism is not a suggestion that one doesn’t fancy the conventional view of God, it is a belief that God doesn’t exist. So, obviously, an atheist would not appeal to God for power.

wait a minute. i am not a god person.
most of the present ideas about god are silly.
but on the other hand the atheist doesnt really have
much of a case. how do you prove no god.
If some god people are politically strong you have to fight politically not just say there is no god.

you guys are pretty touchy. why such a reaction when i am asking if shutting the mouth sometimes might be beneficial i am not saying it is. i am questioning.
attack the ideas. they are ideas not fixed beliefs.

Could bring an interesting new development to the smoothie business.

Suppose a theist uses God to justify flying jet planes into skyscrapers to kill infidels. If there does not have to be a God to accomplish this why does there have to be one to condemn it?

Let alone merely discuss it.

IAM---------the problem is not god. someone flew into the wtt. we dont want that. who gives a shit about the guy’s belief.
we want to stop that person. we failed badly in stopping that before it happened. that is what we should focus on. not all this god shit.

Seems to me that’s precisely the atheist’s goal: shut up with all the mythical-middleman “god shit”, let’s focus on reality. In the meantime, though, the mythical-middleman needs to be dismissed as the source of answers to our prayers.

i agree oughtist. we cannot rely on a god. but it doesnt do any good just talking about it. as long as the atheist is debating with the god people it is a waste of time and energy. you are not going to change anyones mind about the existence of a god. lets get on with the real problems.
