Philosophy’s primary role in my life has been to teach me HOW to think properly, by forcing me to think about how I reason and question why I reason that way…
I’m less likely to say, do, or think something I’ll regret.
It dosn’t help anyone but me… which is why I can’t sell this to anyone for money… it has a ton of value to me, but no value to anyone else.
Just as I expected, you do not want philosophy, you wish aggression. You want me to pick out the thread but, I have no problem , no need to defend, I give you the opportunity to pick one and you attack. You are not interested in honest polite discussion. We have a rant forum that will suit your needs.
My question is very valid and has no agression to it at all, all i do is asking a consturctive question that this sleepy town has never been used to answer before. Just because it’s a critical question where one has to think deep about things, it’s suddenly the end of the world.
I did, you choose the posts not me. Show me what you think are useless threads in the philosophy forum.
And yes your posts show aggression even though you cannot see it. Understanding psychological depths of language is a part of philosophy.
My answer to your Question: show me posts and threads in the philosophy forum that you find useless. I feel no emotion other than amusement in the slightest degree.
Oh and who decided how a person should behave philosophicaly?
Philosophy is still trying to dig us out of the terrible thought that maybe there is no direct rout from the cave to the sunshine but only through the maze
I have learned there is more than one way to treat, view, interpret, use, believe and live philosophy. This often creates what appears to be conflict or does create conflict. One is not all
After reading some of Dresus’ threads he linked, I have a new, maybe better answer, for the practical use of philosophy.
Dresus’ asked what mysteries has philosophy solved. Without philosophy, there would have been no mysteries to solve. Really, I don’t even think I need to explain it. If no one ever asked “What makes a chair a chair?” Plato would have never have invented the theory of forms. Only to later disprove his own theory. No science would have ever taken place, religion wouldn’t even be as evolved as it is today.
Philosophy is just questioning. Answering is science, or rhetoric, or religion, etc…
As i see it, philosophy was a predecessor to science, and are now for the most part obsolete. If you take carefully note, people only ask very rudementary quesytions which are too often silly selfexplanatory ones.
Then there are those so rigid they can only see the surface. Try expanding and relaxing, Strict following teaches very little. You are to set yourself to learn, not follow.
That’s not what we do to our children. They’re supposed to follow what we want them to learn so they will be fitted into our value system. Do children lack intelligence so much that there is nothing at all to be learned from them?
If following is not recommended, then where is one to be placed? Learning implies gaining knowledge and the circumference of knowledge around you places you in the center thus creating your reference point, point of view, perspective and so on.
Well that depends upon how and who raises the kid. We as kids were taught to question and explore, break the simple rules and the folks handed down strict punishment. We were seen and heard. Most of my peers were raised as you describe. My father believed in this process, Mom, not so much, things were different when he was not around. She had an admirable backhand for a small woman.
Are leaders and followers born or raised? Hard to say for me Out of 4 sibs I am the only one to be independent of the family I dearly love. While I am employed I enjoy the respect of my boss to the point of independence. Did Dad do this or was I born to it. Lol many would blame my redhair and freckles and have
I’m not sure if I know exactly what you’re talking about. If I asked you “Is the universe digital or analog?” What would be the straight forward answer to that? Now, the particular reason I place this question in the realm of philosophy is because there is no way for science to conclusively answer it. Or, what if I asked you to tell me which is true, the thesis of free will or that of determinism?
These kinds of questions have resisted all attempt of being answered. Trying to solve them requires one to become a better thinker. Ideally the questions would be impossible to answer, that way those who try to answer them would continually grow as thinkers. It’s analogous to a weight lifter who’s weights get heavier and heavier as their muscles grow.
Though, I could see why impossible questions would be considered silly. So, what about philosophies most “practical” field, morality. Do you think morality is self-explanatory, useless, or what?
