I read at about 450 wpm with a 90.1% comprehension.
This is also a question for those people who read fast - in my head I say every word and every syllable - do you do this? How do you read if you’re reading an enjoyable book? A magazine? A text book?
I swear on my own life and that of my wife and child this is what the website told me.
744wpm…100% Comprehension.
Though I will admit to guessing, straight-up guessing, on two of the questions and getting lucky with the 50/50 by eliminating one answer right off the bat.
The phenomenon you’re referring to is called subvocalization, and it really slows you down. One of the chief things you learn in a speed reading course is to eliminate or at least reduce subvocalization.
I’ve heard of tons of speed reading programs but I feel that they are scams. I haven’t found one scientific evidence that their methods do indeed increase reading speed and comprehension.
So far as I know, “speed reading” is a skill that can be learned. When I was in high school my debate coach taught a speed reading course. I didn’t take it as I was a senior and already had a full slate of classes but he reported that many of his students eventually read between 25-100% faster than before. The skill might be perishable, I dunno. I haven’t taken the speed test yet but I know from previous testing that I read roughly twice as fast as the average person (or I used to at any rate).
Probably because the majority of what I have read for the past 5 years has been philosophy and philosophic novels. I picked the plague the other day and it was like reading down hill. I will admit, however, that I have been toying with the idea of taking a speed reading class through silvan for the past few years, but I am worried that changing my habits will reduce my comprehension, which is absolutely unacceptable.
