economics is man made but the fact is is that we need money to buy things.
To get to the core of what human nature is, you have to first go back about 100,000 years to when the homosapien had no tools and no easy time surviving. Every other trait of man such as compasion, love, sympathy, hate, greed, is self imposed; a gift/curse from ease of survival.
Sadly, I have to agree. We are very territorial. Chuckle, did you see the one of the 15lb Tabby treeing a bear? Hilarious. True story. 
Pehaps human nature is defined by the ceasless interplay between our essential instincts and drives (e.g. sex, hunger, self-affirmation, etc.) with our ability to be fully aware of our actions, invent values and then (try to!) act accordingly?
Meaning, the struggle to replace natural law with a more favourable system.
I agree that to be human is to be a member of society with cultural baggage. Without society and culture we are nothing.
