Pretty is as pretty does
Uhh well…err, uhm… yeah.
Actually, this is a great thread because there are far too many implications in our culture with regard to that word “pretty.” I have raised (my daughter especially) with my old-fashioned phrase (above) because of all the obnoxious attention she gets, and I don’t want her to get a twisted ideal of herself. Our culture is so obsessed with it (that and money) that is makes me want to puke. Taller men get the jobs with the money, prettier women marry the taller men (with the money) and everyone is aspiring to be those beautiful people that we see on the magazine covers. I am not beyond it, believe me, and I look at a pretty woman (differently no doubt) but with just as much scrutiny as a man. The ultra intelligent, virtuous, interesting, kind, decent people are ignored if they aren’t “hot.” To me, it is a sad commentary on our society. It is media driven and all of us buy it hook, line, and sinker. What ever happened to real substance in a person?

there is no such thing as an ugly person. hasnt anyone found another person attractive but not for looks? it can be in posture, movements, expressions.
not all beauty is physical. like, if a gorgeous tall blonde acted trashy and was always messy and dirty, you wouldnt find that attractive, now do you?
and as far as that band goes, i looked at the people, and they werent very attractive to me. I think its just because they are so well-groomed in those photographs and they are wearing nice clothing and matching accessories- but anyone can look good.

i don’t think we do, if i’m permitted to speak for myself. just like i don’t do fast food and action movies (or baseball). nobody forces you to do it, or not do it. if you’re dumb enough to be doing it, you probably belong together anyway.

All people are beautiful, really. Some are called more or less beautiful by media and advertising at any one time…and this opinion on beauty constantly changes. Beautiful today, ugly tomorrow and vice-versa.
It’s not the beautiful people I feel sorry for, or the “Oh-my-God-your-face curdles-milk” people. It’s the guy or gal who’s just “A bit” ugly. I mean, their life is fucked. Not good-looking enough to look twice at, and not hideous enough to look twice at either. They wander through life pretty much invisible. No adoration, no sympathy, just “Huh…? What did you say…?”
If they can’t manage an “in your face” personality… They’re ghosts.
I’m reminded of an old sit-com: This handsome guy has brought this ugly fat girl home (I forget his reason) after a first date, and anyway, they’re sitting on the sofa, and he’s putting his arm around her, pulling her close, puckering up, etc…
And she pushes him away and says: “I’m not that kind of girl…”
And he says, looking amazed: “But… But, you must be…!”
Canned laughter erupts.
I’ve learned from a few people I know that it’s better to get a negative reaction… than no reaction at all.

Sure sure. One only has to look at the urban violence and verbal abuse dished out by the adolescents and other youths in western European cities to see that.
