What you call junk I call a defense of communication!
Shame on you sir !
The “emoticon” is something that one of my advanced age did not have to deal with up until a few years ago, as we communicated with words rather than heinous “smile” face that everyone hated in the 70s for their lack of sincerity.
lets get something straight. i hate emoticon movement.i’m using internet explorer, and for some reason(my advanced roaming inside the myriads of options in windows)no annoying shit moves on my screen.no avatar. no SATD’s guy mauling god knows what. for this sole reason i will not use fire fox at this site, which does allow movement.and unexpected sounds over the computer? i aint gettin into that. i was pondering this b4,without a soul to share it to, but on these forum systems, there is no way to hide the emoticon tray to the left of the post.i really hate some emoticons, the devil ones the most. but these are small potatoes compared to the ones that are 1bigger 2much more annoying 3appearing on commercials online, that i blocked the images of with fire fox.
hey,ad,you may want to disable emoticons on your options tab, if you didnt already. just a thought.
Sure, but as per usual your disagreement is based on a fallacy
There are more words than emoticons and a greater vocabulary not only means greater entropy and the increased likelihood of being misinterpreted, it also means an increased likelihood of being interpreted correctly, nuance being a knife that cuts both ways…
But you don’t need to bother your head with that, just carry on disagreeing…
Adlerian,
Emoticons are, like the abbreviations in text message speak, a visual shorthand that in itself is unproblematic. At a time when literacy is plummeting and most people cannot even construct a complete sentence without having to start 3 others first it becomes problematic.
I have to side with Old Gobbo on this one. No one likes it when someone does this:
but If used appropriately, emoticons can be an effective tool of communication on forums. The can help denote sarcasm, for example. And to be honest with you, I prefer a " " to a “ROFLOL”. Text symbols are often too difficult to interpret.
For example, on another forum, I recently came accross this:
“TNSTAFL”
I later was told that this is supposed to mean:
“There’s No Such Thing As a Free Lunch”. Now that, my friends, is annoying.
Someoneisatthedoor does have a point in saying that we are too lazy when it comes to literacy. I definately agree with this. And emoticons can be a cheap exuse for taking the time to construct a colorfull, well written sentence. L33t Speak is ruining teenagers in their emails and Instant message exachanges. I refuse to use it.
But, it makes no sense to turn this thread into a flurry of Ad Hominem attacks between Siatd and Old Gobbo. Just because some tends to disagree a lot does not necessarily make their opinions uncredible. Pessamism can be annoying, but there is nothing wrong with being a critic.
not trying to play the “peace-maker”, but I think this thread can have some value if we put aside the pettiness…no offense of course. Just my humble thoughts, anywhoo…
Gobbo, if you had any interest in maintaining a proper discussion then I’d be more polite but since all of your recent communications with me have contained such nonsense as ‘I haven’t seen this set of TV shows but I’m going to comment on them anyway, but you are the one who is dick wagging’ and ‘You are just like/want to be like Dunamis/Imp because I say so, even though I lack the intelligence to distinguish between these people’ not to mention your whole ‘I am as smart as I think I am’ escapade I would suggest that you don’t comment on anything that I say. No offence, but you just aren’t in a authoritative position to discuss most of the topics with which I am concerned and attacking strawmen because you don’t understand the topic serves to do nothing except make you appear stupid.
Of course the other option is to educate yourself and thus actually become capable of discussing these topics but we all know that you are far too lazy and arrogant to do that. You don’t seek to grow, intellectually or emotionally, and invariably retreat into ‘I’m not taking this seriously’ whenever someone demonstrates your ignorance.
I’ve met so many people like you, and I mean exactly like you in terms of thought processes and self-assessments, that I do wonder about those times when you claim to be ‘thinking for yourself’ or just ‘being yourself’ and whether this is a delusion or just a lie…
