Just wanted to have a Poll on how many ILP’ers want to quit their job, or would if they could!

I dig my job. Makes me happy.

Long hours, short money, lots of babes. I love my job.

What is it?

I’m a restaurant manager.

I like my job. Five months of paid holiday a year. 24 hours in the classroom a week. Health insurance. Pay scale ahead of the curve. Helps that I’m good enough at it to automatic pilot for most of the time.

If I quit my job I would be quitting on the people who love me, so no matter how much I hate the more mundane and inane tasks I do, I would not quit my job for anything.

Tab - you mean that there are teachers that aren’t on autopilot all of the time?

I thought this thread would be less depressing, but I figured many of the people on these forums have a job they actually enjoy.

My next question, for those who love their job, would be, did you happen to just fall into a job you love, or did you actively pursue a specific career choice?

I’m having trouble getting from where I am to where I want to be.

Then you need to take it one slow step at a time, plan it. Most of us started out with crap jobs. I know I did. My career choice took planning and persistance and a lot of crap. I would have had a great paying career if I had not chose to be a stay at home parent. You have to plan and stick with the plan, you have to take crap to get to where you want to be , unless your parents are wealthy that is.

Where do you want to be?

I work to live, not live to work. No matter how much I liked my job, that’s all it would ever be. A job. And I don’t want a job, at least not unless it enables me to do other things, you know the important stuff like eating.

I’ve actually only ever had two jobs, KFC, and Scottish Gas, and to be honest, because of the attitude I take towards them, I don’t mind them that much.

Something with radio or television broadcasting. I currently don’t have a college degree.

Why do you want to work in that industry and why don’t you go to college?

Are American Colleges the equivalent of English Universities?

I just enjoy communicating in general. I think it’d be awesome to have my own radio show.

I’m not familiar enough with English universities, or American collges for that matter, to know if they’re similar. I’m one of those bottom feeders who’s parents never stressed the importance of college, never took the time or interest in helping me succeed there. My stepdad wouldn’t even cosign a student loan for me, and my mom doesn’t work. I ran out of money one semester in.

While I know it’s not impossible for me to go to college, it’s intimidating and frustrating. But I’d love to go back. I don’t think I’ll qualify for help from the U.S. government for another year, though. So right now, I think it’s a waiting game. Plus with the credit crisis, I’m not sure about the availability of student loans.

Well I quite agree with what humegotitright said, “I work to live, not live to work”. If it is communication you want then you can find that in a million jobs but if radio is your thing then you’ll do whatever it takes to get in there. I’ve just spent a number of years at university, changing courses numerous times and just generally pissing around not taking it seriously, I’m now out, don’t want to do anything I ever thought I did and am now planning to go to Korea to teach English, not because I want to teach English but there is an opportunity there for self-sustainable travel which I am going to try and take advantage of.

Don’t work for them let them work for you

I fucking hate my job. I am no better then a factory worker
given all I do is stand at a checkstand and slid shit over
a scanner all day long, then I bag the crap. slid shit, then bag it.
slid shit then bag it. repeat again and again for 8 hours, 5 days a week.
I have worked for over 30 years and this is the single worst job ever and
that is including my 2 weeks stretch at a sewage plant. I have supervisors and
managers that are my daughter’s age and who don’t know jack about anything.

Kropotkin

I’ve sometimes considered answering those ads to travel to Korea and teach English…just never had the balls to commit. Good luck if you decide to do it, let me know how it goes. Hell, I might have to join you out there.

Sorry to hear that Peter. Seems like you are a smart guy who enjoys intelligent discussion, hope something better comes along. But if I kill you…who’s going to kill me? ](*,)

Heh, I guess you haven’t worked at a fiberglass plant.
