Hey POR,
Funny, I dream of someday visiting Australia and N.Z.
Michael
I think Salt Lake City (or anywhere in the bible belt) might be more your style PoR but, as a fellow Sydney-sider, (you don’t know how embarrassing it is for me to admit that I live in the same city as you) I totally agree with you.
As a matter of fact, I will buy a one way ticket to NYC for you.
Polemarchus, you would love NZ (I’ve read some of your posts). NZ is still largely unspoiled… beautiful, rugged, scenery and politically centre/left. My only dislike it that it’s not called the “Land of the Long White Cloud” for nothing. It can get very cold and long summers of bright blue skies are rare. But then again, its only a short flight to the warm South Pacific Islands to thaw out.
Kia Ora (Good Luck/Welcome in Maori)
I’ve been to NYC, NZ and Aus and I would definately recommend NYC and NZ (how different can 2 places be!). As for Aus, well if you’re going to be in NZ anyway you could always pop over for the day…should be long enough…
…only kidding . Make it a long weekend.
Hi km2_33,
Oh man, wish you hadn’t said that. I’ve been saving my dough for a super early retirement.
Actually, about three years ago my brother and his girlfriend spent over a year to make a loop around the world. He started in Africa, then up to Europe, across to the Mid-East, then the Far-East, Australia, NZ, and then to Argentina and finally by bus/train back to Quebec up the length of South America, stopping to climb volcanos and whatnot.
When he arrived back on my doorstep (unfortunately, with dysentery), I asked him what was the place he’d return to first. I barely got the question outta my mouth when he said “New Zealand.” Seems it beat-out bungie jumping in Zimbabwe and wine tasting in France.
Oh yea, the rain. My neighbor spent this past Christmas in NZ. She said it rained nearly everyday. She still had a wonderful time. She even broke down and went to see those damned glow-worms. Think I’ll skip that. She brought us back a jar of vegetarian Marmite. God, that’s disgusting stuff. I once slathered a piece of toast with it at a B&B in England. I’d have offered it to the dog, only I like animals. Maybe I’ll use it as deer repellant in the garden.
New Zealand is definitely on my list. But my next big trip is to walk the entire “Way of St. James,” beginning in central France, and crossing the the mountains down into Spain, and ending at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostella. I’ll wear the traditional pilgram’s “Acorn” right next to my “Buck Fush” button.

We don’t talk about Marmite 'round here… it is Vegemite or nothing! Marmite is a UK clone… Its a Coke/Pepsi kinda comparison: The Real Thing vs a sweet UK imitation. (Delboy take note)
I have tried Vegemite, but I can’t remember if I noticed a difference or not (but then I can’t tell the difference between Pepsi and Coke).
With regards to having Marmite on toast, there is an art to it. You don’t want your toast to be so hot that the butter melts straight away because you need to blend the Marmite into the butter as you spread it…and obviously not too much Marmite as the taste can be overpowering. Putting Marmite on your toast is a great way of spicing up Baked Beans on Toast (of course the grated cheese over the top is the clincher!).
PS Are you sure that Vegemite is the original?
i wanted to travel but i dont have much money and im not savy enough to travel cheaply so… i think ill stay in crap america.
Beg your pardon Delboy, I stand corrected. Marmite seems to have been invented a decade or two earlier than Vegemite (in 1902?). So let me rephrase what I meant to say: the Old boring Marmite vs the New Improved Vegemite. Now back to the topic…(before we get into trouble)
CBA Have you thought of doing a life swap with Pinnacle?
I’d like to visit NYC too. I don’t know if i’m enough of a mover and a shaker to live there – unless attending college. I’d especially like to visit the Village: stop in some jazz clubs – do they have Beat poetry readings or folk music anymore?
Australia might be fun to visit, but we have samples of their ultra-cute animals in zoos here, and I don’t surf – or i could learn Aboriginal skills like in the book Mutant Message Down Under.
I’m so very homesick today. I don’t want to visit anywhere, I just wanna go home to Africa where the sun shines everyday and when it rains, it thunders and the earth moves and I want to smell the smells and look into people’s eyes and drive through the trees that hold hands in Johannesburg and the friendliness, I miss the friendliness…oh I so miss home today…
