Idiocracy

“Private Joe Bauers, the definition of “average American”, is selected by the Pentagon to be the guinea pig for a top-secret hibernation program. Forgotten, he awakes 500 years in the future. He discovers a society so incredibly dumbed-down that he’s easily the most intelligent person alive.”

Meant to be a comedy, I find this film to be more of a horror. It really makes you think about society and you have to consider that though this movie may be exaggerated, it’s certainly on the right track. The human species is being dumbed down and before long it’s going to show. I highly recommend this movie to everyone on this forum. It’s a staggering look at our potential future. Go check it out.

I don’t remember any rehab in the movie…what part was that?

I thought it was scary as well. Paints a grim future if we don’t change our ways. I particularly liked the Cosco scene.

i actually thought that the film was a good idea. my favourite parts are the scenes with the breeding charts in the beginning. this could be an apocalyptic message for the future course of the Earth if we aren’t careful

This movie was deeply intuitive, although, I doubt the method by which it chose to bring about the future society.

It seems that today, just the opposite is the case, where lower income (read lower moral standing) individuals are wanting more for themselves personaly, and are more apt to have an abortion, where as the individual with higher moral standards are more apt to bring the pregnancy to full term.

I would argue instead, that the dumbing down process would be the result of political / economic trends in society, (and I could argue from my perspective as a Christian as well, that the loss of a Christian worldview, leads to an ignorant and unenlightened society such as the one represented in the movie.)

We could debate the means and causes by which this “Idiocracy” coudl likely be produced, but I appreciate the filmmakers for having the vision and forsight to make this.

I found the lack of asthetic appreciation particularly interesting. In the “Idiocracy” the top movie of the year is called, “Ass.” A picture of some guys ass is displayed, and it occasionaly farts. The crowd loves it. Also, a hit TV series, “Ow my balls” was popular, and as already mentioned, the TV show, “Rehab.” I think this exagerates the loss of asthetic appreciation in our own society today, and it is this element that I find strikingly relevant, and insightful.

Also, the line, “Are you trying to read those words? You Fag!” sticks out in my mind.

Even though this movie has a bunch of foul attempts at humor, and much uneeded profanity, I still think it presents a clear, and very much needed message.
