Can you cite an example of how surveilling your corresponence makes me safer? It seems that’s only logically even possible if you were conspiring to commit a crime.
Imp, this doesn’t have much to do with liberal/conservatives. Just as there are supposed conservatives who support the big government war machine, there are supposed liberals who don’t. When you call either group hypocritical, you’re essentially asserting that their justifications are inadequate.
Isn’t this just what Anon is accusing the US of, though? The other nation is under no obligation to change its mind, and it’s not surprising that they aren’t bowing to our national interests. That’s what diplomacy is all about, and even when it’s difficult, it’s far more effective than war.
Phaedrus, that’s what I meant. Without surveilling anyone, we won’t catch potential threats, and since our surveillance is very unlikely to be perfect (i.e. only those who do bad are surveilled), we need to accept some errors. Surveilling me would be a false positive, and as it is totally unintrusive, it’s preferable to a false negative that allows a plane to intrude into a skyscraper, or a virus into a stock market.
EDITED for typos.
If Iran does something to provoke Israel, war will break out. With them being in the middle of the United Emirates, they would probably feel no choice but to attack. It would be in the best interest of Iran to get off the idea of wanting Israel out of the way because the Jewish people probably feel they have nothing to lose.

I also find it hard to get what your stance is. Liberals shouldn’t have been against Bush’s wiretapping policies? Or they should be against this new ruling also? And now you mention Big Brother, a potential that obviously both the right and left have elements who yearn for. Is wire tapping and a Stasi like approach better when the suggestion comes from some right wing think tank?
I tried asking a similar question and got ignored, MSS; there is such a morass of contradictions in what passes for a rant on Imp’s part it’s hard to fathom.
