ILP OPEN POETRY COMPETITION - 1ST EDITION

hello

It has not escaped our notice, that more than one poster here has a flair for the pen. It occurred to us, that a judged poetry competition would be most gratuitous, and excellent. I propose thus:

  1. That, beginning today, there be two weeks for all who would like to participate to indicate intent,

  2. That each participant pledge $5 US to the winner,

  3. That MagsJ judge the competition, unless she would like to participate, in which case we would need an alternate,

  4. That the 2nd edition be judged by the winner of the 1st edition, and so forth, or by a surrogate named by MagsJ or Carleas should they be unavailable, ideally MagsJ once again,

  5. That all poems be written in equal meter and length, to be decided in this thread,

  6. That all moneys be sent to MagsJ, or Carleas, via paypal, once registration is closed, participation dependant,

  7. That a special thread someplace be erected, to publish the poems in cycle.

I’m used to publishing poems for free. I will not pay to have my poems in contests.

Alright, Ierrellus is out.

I’ve had a number of short stories and one poem (so far) published in magazines. I’d be interested in doing this but I’m opposed to a fixed meter or length.

I do not want to participate, but think that there should be at least two judges…?

Fuck you.

Poetry is not a competition.

One of my favorite quotes of all time was Michael McDonald explaining that poetry is not about what you say, but what people understand from it.

All poems are contradictions — but contradictions don’t define meaning.

I’ll give you a poem:

Fuck you. And bless your soul.

The idea is to have a uniformity, to allow for an easier comparison of skill for the judge. It’s in the spirit of competition here, nobody is writing their magnum opus.

Also, even though I am suggesting (a small amount of) money to get some artistic commitment, it’s meant to be fun.

That’s also a reason for the single judge. One one hand, we pick one single person whose taste we trust. On the other, we acknowledge that judging a poem is intrinsically subjective, we won’t insult the participants with the additiion of a second judge and the pretense that that would add objectivity.

I mean, I’ll participate as a judge… plus 1 more, but not as a competition entry.

F you too!

Ec is out.

Now I’m going to lay it into you…

Do you doubt the Godhood of Michael McDonald!!!??

Absolutely not. The wise man has the power

That’s funny. I used to think those were the lyrics too.

I was disappointed when I found out the actual lyrics were:

“The wise man has NO power to reason away what a fool believes”

Psh.

A wise man has no desire.

The wise know they have to plan their forever.

I am interested in entering the suggested poetry competition but only if at least one other poet enters.I could use the five bucks.

I’m in.

Now we just have to decide on the parameters.

Maybe it would be just as well if we left that to the judge.

We need a second judge.

No, OK, look, Meno and I will figure it out.

Meno, what do you think could be a good format for the poems?

_
Ok, ok… just me then as judge, but I’m sure that others will pass comment.
