I'm wondering

What’s the point of
cutting off
a sentence
midway through,
instead
of writing it in a
straight line?

Is there
a rule
about it;
in a book
or
in on an online article
perhaps?

Because!!!,

It seems to me,
most poems in this section
are just
plain sentences
cut off midway
a straight line
and finished in
the next.

And they don’t
even rhyme…

Most seem like
lay opinions
about some issue[s].

Why not
just state them
in paragraph form?

Nice poem, Erlir!

Made much better by its form, an important factor in poetry. Otherwise of course it’s just prose. And prose is fine, but poetry is a different art form entirely. The structure gives it a kind of visual quality, helping it to appeal to more than one sense. It also produces a kind of emphasis where needed, thus fortifying an idea, perhaps, in a way that could not be possible if it was written straight out. Whereas prose keeps one reading straight through, poetry (properly structured) has yips and cliffs and potholes and plateaus, resting places and roller-coaster ups and downs. Poetry is thus experienced, rather than just read.

Perhaps it’s an acquired taste. Stick around. Acquire it.
