Costa Rica on Monday became the first Latin American country to ban hunting as a sport, after an unanimous and final vote from Congress.

Lawmakers had provisionally approved a reform to its Wildlife Conservation law back in October. With a population of 4.5 million people, Costa Rica is one of the world’s most biodiverse nations.

The central American country is already known for its environmental mindset, with 25% of its land protected as national parks or reserves.

Under the new law, those caught hunting can face up to four months in prison or fines of up to $3,000.

Smaller penalties for people who steal wild animals or keep them as pets were also included in the reform. Jaguars, pumas and sea turtles are among Costa Rica’s most treasured species.

“There is no data on how much money hunting generates in the country, but we do know there are currently clandestine hunting tours that go for about $5,000 per person,” said Arturo Carballo, deputy director at Apreflofas, an environmentalist organisation who spearheaded the reform.

Foreign hunters come to Costa Rica in search of exotic felines while others look to obtain rare and colorful parrots as pets.

This is also Costa Rica’s first proposal that came to Congress by popular initiative, with 177,000 signatures calling for the ban submitted two years ago.

I think all hunters have a real issue with self esteem or like a sexual malfunction.

Yeah it’s a little weird. I’ve never really clicked with any people who hunted animals except this one guy I knew from when I was a kid who hunts in Africa and kills all kinds of crazy shit. I’m not so sure about just imprisoning them though. And actually now that I think about it, the place I live now would literally be overrun with deer if they didn’t kill tons of em. I mean, some states you can only kill one per season…here you can kill one per day. Sounds crazy I know, but during some times of the year man those fucking things start running across interstates and showing up downtown it would be nuts if they didn’t get rid of some of them. But then I dunno if that’s really doing it “for sport”, more so it might just be letting people do it for sport as a means of accomplishing an actual goal.

Killing for fun is pretty screwed up. I’m not sure if killing “for sport” is the same thing as killing “for entertainment” or not. I kind of think it is though.

I often get meat from hunters, though I don’t hunt myself. I think it’s probably the most humane meat to eat - if there is such a thing.

Must be a dreadful nuisance if you have to resort to shooting them. What kind of things do they get up to when they come downtown?

If you mean Pelham, then yes. That area in particular is pretty loaded with them. They always run into the sides of people’s cars and cause accidents. My friend ran a pizza business out there and his drivers are plagued by them sometimes. One kid got both sides of his car smashed within a few weeks of each other. I don’t shoot any of them myself, but there are plenty of hunting types in the area that are glad to slaughter them daily in the name of less insurance claims and corpse disposal units having to be dispatched.

Some people would claim that watching little girls prance in tights is reminiscent of pedophilia.

I’m not sure what you have against hunters. Sounds like a rant.

This jsut in poaching rates in costa rica skyrocket.
