i realized that i only notice somebody if they either stand out or affect/come in contact with me in some way. i usually do not notice people sitting behind me in class, one time even mistaking a guy for a new student! in fact, though i know that i (and most people to some extent) usually see things from my perspective and how it affects me.
You are self-absorbed. It is hard not to be in a culture which encourages such beliefs above all others. Ironically, many people trot out the ‘individual freedom of the will’ bullshit to substantiate their claims to rebellion and non-conformity…
I don’t think that means you are an egotist or self involved. It could mean that you are just highly focused. Like tunnel vision. You may focus on the action in front of you so much, that your periphial side doesn’t acknowledge the action going on beside you or behind you. I know a few people like that. Folks not knowing them have mistaken them for being self involved or egotistical. You may even find you have brushed people off unknowingly if you thought about it. Certain actions and reactions come with being highly focused these can be attributed to ego and self absorbed.
My dear husband and son have that affliction, plus some others that are related to me or just friends. My husband being the way he is, has helped me see through to what others have thought of as egotistical or self absorbed. I learned to recognize it in others, so I know how to treat them and get their attention. Perhaps that is the way you are, Just focused. Its more detailed than this but, I have outlined its basics.
If you’re saying that you consider youself the only important person in the room, that is one thing. But we all see the world from our personal perspective. As Tab suggested, there isn’t any other choice. I’m not sure what you’re driving at. Clarification please?
Hilarious embracetrees. I daily eat lunch with several people, three of which I do not know their first name. Know what they teach, know regarding their interests, know they have children or no, know that one has been engaged for 8 years…Haven’t a clue as to what their first name is.
What is really sad is that I have students who I like know about, know their likes and dislikes through their essays, cannot remember their names.
Selfish, ego centered, not really as they really do not know boo regarding me and my life, but I know about them.
Hilarious. This may be because of my focus in the subject matter I am teaching and not the individuals I am instructing.
Hell, I’ve 180+ students to deal with on a weekly basis.
