incest.. immoral or just taboo?

here is a link to an article about a couple whom were twins separated at birth, then found each other later in life and married each other without realizing they were brother and sister… read over the article if you choose, its not necessary to the topic but does give a real life example and is why i felt so inclined to post on the subject.

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7182817.stm

simply put: incest isnt morally wrong, its simply a social taboo, and just gross. the only thing standing in the way of its moral stature is the fact that there truly is a high percentage chance of having retard babies. therefore, as we define immorality easily and quite simply as the intentional harm to one whom does not desire harm caused to him/herself… we can conclude that such odds, if any… are reason enough not to partake it in such acts to cause prior odds.

with this in mind we may find it reasonable to conclude that it is not incest which is immoral but sex with intent of bearing children in such circumstances to be deemed immoral.

comments? arguments? feedback of any kind?

I would certainly hope that a reasonbly sane person would find it immoral and wrong.

dude that means nothing… perhaps a little less ambiguity and we can actually discuss this?

Why would it even be an issue of immorality? A reasonably sane person would realize that someone elses choice to screw their sister isn’t doing any harm.

I suppose your statement would cover having incestual relationships with the whole family?

All members that are capable of concent, yes. Two concenting adults choosing to have sex with each other is not an issue of morality.

:-& if any male family members tried to mount me: I’d kick their horny ass!

My brain tells me that incest is vile and wrong and…

I personally find the concept disgusting, and do not condone it. However, I don’t really care if someone else chooses to have a go at a family member if they are both in agreement about it.

Do you think children would have the presence of mind to realize what consent is? Is there an age of a child which makes it perfectly alright to have sex with another family member? What about people who go to prison…should other inmates get consent before invading another person’s body, or is it alright to take what they want? I’m sorry, but I don’t find your reasoning sane. The psychological impacts of such acts would destroy the fabric of mankind.

Yeah, what others choose to do is up to them - apparently some of my cousins (who are more Indian) have dabbled with incest, and I have wondered if this is due to their innate Indian qualities: as us with less Indian blood are repulsed by the idea of it! They are all really good-looking though, but they needs to learn some self control…

If you find this concept disgusting, why would you even argue in the affirmative of it in any vein?

Tortoise, I don’t see the relational analogy between mushrooms and family incest?

Did you not read my post? I said concenting ADULTS. As for prision, if the two individuals are not both concenting, it’s called rape- Rape IS an issue of morality. Two related adults agreeing to have sex is in no way related to a child having sex with a family member or a prison inmate ass raping another prison inmate.

Because the fact that I don’t like it does not make it immoral. My choice to not have sex with my brother does not make it wrong for someone else to have sex with theirs.

I am not arguing FOR it, I am arguing against labling it as immoral. There is nothing wrong with it, I just wouldn’t engage in it myself.

Ok, we know mushrooms disgust you, how do you feel about family incest? Does that disgust you?

Precisely.

Ever heard the phrase “Though I do not agree with what you say, I will defend to the death your right to say it?”

I may not want to have sex with my brother, but that doesn’t mean I won’t defend a persons right to do so. There are a lot of things I don’t like. but they are not issues of morality, just of personal preference.

P.S- Mayt? Me? ahhhhh noooooo…I won’t make you write my whole name, but could you call me Tace, please?

So, if someone doesn’t find mutilation of people immoral, it takes on a new label? My real question is then, does immorality exist in your mind other than a word used everyday or does it not have a dialetical place in language?

There is a difference, again, between two concenting adults having sex, and someone mutilating another.

One, the first, is not an issue of morality…the two adults are concenting to the sex.

The second is an issue of morality. It’s immoral. The rights of the person being mutilated are being infringed upon.

The fact that I find human mutilation icky is NOT what makes it immoral…the fact that you may not find it icky does not make it moral. It is the fact that rights are being violated that makes it an immoral act, not your perception or my perception of it.

So Tace and Tortoise both have different ideas of ‘morality’ as do I.

:cough: Her view.

Mainly due to the fact I don’t consider it to be a normal function of the human species. There are plenty of people in this world to choose to have relationships with rather than depending on finding it sexually expedient to have those type of relations with family members. It could have severe psychological impacts concerning the people who would delve into such an act. Even if it is consentual between adult family members, it could debase itself into younger family members over time taking away their basic human rights.
