INTERVIEW WITH MAGSJ

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to another installment of the ILP Sessions, this one with MagsJ. MagsJ is both a long-time poster and Moderator at our ILP community and likely has a better sense of fashion and style than any other poster at this site.

1.) Tell us about your handle, MagsJ, I get the feeling that it is a play on your first name and either your middle or last initial. If not, then what does your handle represent, if so, then why something so simple?

2.) You’ve been quite professionally successful and spend your days (well, mostly nights) flitting around with London’s socio-economic elite, a love of high fashion and a love of high reason are on completely opposite ends of the spectrum, so what about your personality draws you both to the material world of style and the intellectual pursuit of Philosophy?

3.) You’ve recently mentioned that you are not presently working, as you have more than enough for your needs right now and are enjoying focusing on being a socialite, do you think that when you get back to work it will continue to be in the fashion or advertising industry, or are you considering a career change?

4.) How would you sum up your personal Philosophy?

5.) Your Rank is, “Narcissist,” however you come across as very kind, humble and concerned about the welfare of others, in what ways do you consider yourself a Narcissist when you seem to put others first?

6.) If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be, and do you have one major regret?

7.) As discussed in a thread some time ago, you bear a significant resemblance to a high-profile fashion model, have you ever worked as a model yourself? If so, why not now, if not, why not?

8.) You seem very laid-back here on ILP, how does that compare to your nature in real-life? In fact, in what ways does the RL MagsJ differ from the ILP MagsJ?

9.) If there was one thing you could do that you have not yet done, what would it be?

Hey there! :handgestures-salute:

You are indeed correct there, Pav - I shortened my first name to the cooler and snazzier ‘Mags’ which is what I go by anyway, and added the first letter of my surname, as I thought Mags was too informal and I’m more of a formal kinda gal!

Good question!

I think that if one wants to be taken seriously in certain circles then one has to be able to think smart/fast as well as look good/stylish, for it’s an unforgiving circle to be in, but I prefer it to all the other choices out there as it’s the only one where the people make me feel at home…

I’d consider a career change from advertising if it involved a hell of a lot of money  A businessman has actually employed my services to sell/market a product called ‘Taste strips’ which I will earn a hell of a lot of commission from if I make even one sale, so I plan to make lots of sales, but that job is still within the same industry as the product is a marketing-tool to help advertise/sell edible goods - I’d go into TV or presenting work if the chance arose and the money was worth the price of fame…

“Have fun, but not at the expense of others” - a simple yet effective mind-set for being able to live life to the full, for if I cannot live life at full pelt then I shouldn’t be here… [-(

I wouldn’t say I put others first, for I’m no altruist Pav, but I do take the ‘whole’ into consideration when I make decisions, so my narcissism is able to be exercised parallel to that.
The Narcissist exists whereby every activity and relationship is defined by the hedonistic need to acquire the symbols of spiritual wealth, this becoming the only expression of rigid, yet covert, social hierarchies. It is a culture where liberalism only exists insofar as it serves a consumer society, and even art, sex and religion lose their liberating power.
I chose this quote to add to my signature because I could relate to it’s sentiment - the posher/richer the people the more promiscuous they are, and I want no part in that/I prefer to practice celibacy when not in a relationship, hence the need for narcissism as there is always someone trying to get into your pants/your bed!

I wouldn’t change anything about my life or the decisions I have made, otherwise I wouldn’t have taken the path that has led me to this place in time - it was my intended path, after-all.

Nah, I’ve never modeled - I’m too short to be a model, which brings me nicely to one of my woes ‘Models get paid to be stared at, but people stare at me for free’ :sad-roulette: I think… no, I know, that that is why I have found solace for this injustice in the comforting gaze of high society…

They are one and the same, as, quite frankly, I don’t have the time or energy to create another persona as I’m too busy living life at full pelt, remember. 8-[

I really want to snowboard down the Tibetan Himalayas, and while I’m in that neck of the (meditating) woods I could kill two birds with one stone by meditating with the monks… but fuck the ‘waking up early to clean and one bowl of rice a day’ part! :obscene-birdiedoublegreen:

Excellent start MagsJ, I think this will prove to be quite a good Interview:

To continue:

10.) So, your modus operandi is to Philosophize and look damn good doing it, I like it. You know physical attractiveness/cleanliness and a sharp mode of dress often result in a person being taken more seriously and also results in a better first impression as far as others are concerned. Do you think if Philosophy were more style-oriented as well (and I mean more than just discourse) that more people would actively participate?

11.) You mention TV or presenting work if the price is right, but then Philosophy is another love of yours. Do you see any potential with Philosophy Hour with MagsJ on BBC or anything like that?

12.) You state that, “Have fun, but not at the expense of others,” to be your personal Philosophy and it helps you live life to its fullest. Do you think that actually going out of your way to ensure the enjoyment of others (a pay it forward sort of thing) could help you both grow personally and Philosophically?

13.) Promiscuity often goes hand-in-hand with wealth, I believe, because we seek to make ourselves as individuals stronger, and because those with resources are often deemed more attractive due to an evolutionary imperative towards survival and continuation of oneself via children. Do you think this may have anything to do with the promiscuity of the rich, and if so, why do you actively avoid same?

14.) When you mention this being, “Your intended path,” are you stating that you have a plan for your entire life already laid out, or are you stating that since there was intent behind every decision you have ever made, that where your life currently is would be indirectly a matter of intent?

15.) Why do you think models are required to be tall?

16.) Your real-life personality and ILP persona are the same? Doesn’t it require a border-line insane amount of energy to be as charismatic in real life as you are on here?

17.) I understand about not wanting to limit oneself to a bowl of rice a day. I also understand about your opinions relating to fashion, would you go as far as to say that you are materialistic, or does material possession simply work itself naturally into tthe Philosophy of having as much fun as possible and going full throttle?

18.) Are you an avid snowboarder?

19.) If you absolutely had to work in any other industry unrelated to Fashion, Modeling, TV, Production, Entertainment or anything of the like, what would it be and why?

That’s it, I’m sold. I’m offering your father three thoroughbred Turkish fighting camels for a marriage contract. Do you have all your own teeth…?

Hey, what happened to the yak? Damn…I was gonna make a comment about it, too.

I’ll do Tab one over and throw in four mountain goats with that.

Lactating mountain goats.

I do not believe that you possess Turkish fighting camels. And certainly not thoroughbreds like mine. Admit it, you’re just making it up to appear witty and charming.

You got me. Sigh. I can source some goats though. Does that diminish the embarrassment?

You put sauce on goats…?

You’re just weird. :astonished:

‘Put sauce on goats?’ Is that some kind of weird Turkish euphemism?

I fear our sauce/goat related meanderings are detracting from the seriousness of the matter in hand.

Oh dear, did I just say ‘in hand’…?

Saucey.

What the…? :open_mouth: Has my thread been :text-threadjacked:

#-o

Sorry, it’s still here - look, Pav asked a whole bunch of new questions, with absolutely no camel content whatsoever.

Let’s just like “see if we can get past this” k.?

Haha, ok - I’m a’answering round two of my interview right about now…

I couldn’t possibly hazard a guess at that one Pav, as even in the same social circles, interests would vary from person to person :confusion-shrug:

I guess I just have an interest in the mental as well as the physical, but who’s to say that a Fashionista would have even if philosophy were more stylish… Now if it were fashionable, perhaps!

Indeed I can :stuck_out_tongue:

My guests would be varied, and the topics of conversation, broad - anything and everything would be up for philosophical debate (apart from the unethical, that is, as I can’t abide those that take advantage of the weak).
I’d love to debate about the current dilemmas that face us all, like: dating pot-holes, fashion as expression, effects of our immediate environment on our psyche, what your social circle says about you, etc. etc. etc.

Well Pav, I do it purely for selfish reasons  you see, living life that way means no head-aches/confrontations, and so life is more enjoyable/hedonistic/carefree - if I do gain anything from it, it is purely as a by-product of a very selfish way of life! 8-[

I think the gains are Spiritual, as I have more time to go inward/focus than an aggressive/extrovert type would have - the more inward I got, the more herded out I became…

Remember:
The Narcissist exists whereby every activity and relationship is defined by the hedonistic need to acquire the symbols of spiritual wealth, this becoming the only expression of rigid, yet covert, social hierarchies.

Well, when a complete stranger comes straight up to you and asks, if he can go back to your’s/if you wanna go back to his right now, it’s not that hard a moral decision to make

The deduction is… that all the wealthy have left to experience is the pleasures of the flesh, as they have experienced all that money can buy…

Yes, it is the intent behind the decisions rather than some pre-ordained plan for us all, that I meant… but you never know if they could be one and the same!

Right now, I couldn’t see my life being any other way, so my decision-making has worked for me not against me - my own fate was definitely in my own hands. [-o<

In the 40s and 50s models were around average height/my height, but I think that nepotism changed all that - nepotism changes everything…

Charismatic, huh? Ah, sweet

Haha, yes, people always ask me where do I get my endless supply of energy from - the answer is that I don’t know, but I’m not sure if it has anything to do with constantly getting electrocuted on a light-switch in the box room at the family home when I was a kid. :open_mouth: I regularly get electric shocks off of electronic appliances and cheap acrylic department-store carpets… :scared-shocked: or maybe I subconsciously tap into the National Grid!

I think I have become only as materialistic as my lifestyle dictates is neccessary… and no more.

My home is minimal, and my personal possessions are all lovingly possessed, but that is not to say that my furnishings and possessions are cheap :-" I give all my unwanted possessions to charity, and I recycle everything that is recyclable (even food).

Since my uncle taught me to meditate (at the grand old age of three) I have never really desired much, but aspiring is harder to deny to oneself (especially when it happens with ease) so it’s easier to go with than to fight against!

I cut my teeth on the slopes of Champery in the Swiss Alps when a neighbour invited me to come with her to visit her cousin and her cousin’s boyfriend, but they weren’t pleased when I strapped myself onto a board as the couple were ski instructors #-o

Champery:

I have been to the French Alps 3 times since then: Les Arc, Alpe d’Huez, and Tignes:
Les Arc 1800:

Alpe d’Huez:

Tignes:

This was the best resort, as we could snowboard all the way to our hotel door or to the local bar across the road - that’s a good thing when you’ve been on the slopes all day (10am till 6pm) and all you wanna do is change into some dry clothes and chill! :music-listen:

I haven’t been for the last two seasons, but I am going next season/in the Spring, so avid? you decide! :confusion-shrug:

Assassin

:violence-snipersmiley:

I could retire after a coupla jobs… with the man of my dreams. :stuck_out_tongue:

Maybe Ken, barbie doll?

Funny… not!

Hi MagsJ,

I am curious about your educational background. If I recall correctly, you had a math/applied math background.

In any case, I am curious to find out if you think that your education affected/augmented your world view, and in particular what your views on causality/determinism might be.

Thanks Ed

did Magsj finish? I’m intrigued!
