Is ego a necessity?

When trying to live the “good life,” is it necessary to have a sense of ego?

just as in trying to live the “average” life, there is a necessity of an ego…

it’s part of the human package…

If you take the Freudian ego and apply it to the Platonic ‘heart’, and use the heart in conjuction with the mind to live the good life, as Plato says, I do not see how it can be done otherwise.

Do you mean a sense of individuality? Or a sense of over-inflated self-importance?

Over-inflated self-importance is probably a hindrance to the good life.
Under-estimating your own worth can also hinder you.
It is better to have a moderate, and hopefully accurate sense of your own worth.

the ego is essential for the hedonist’s “good” life…

too many ways to define the “good” life.

Any life requires the ego. It’s how you wield it that can be altered.
