I don’t like fundamentalism, probably for the reasons that you don’t like it.

However:

This is not necessarily given, and this is a good portion of the lesson Europe is learning at the hands of the Islamists. It is a lesson they should have learned at the hands of the fascists (it’s okay as long as it’s just Poland? Memory lane anyone?). Tolerance promotes peace only when what is tolerated is itself peaceful. Tolerance of evil just allows it to do its damage unopposed. There are some things that should be tolerated that aren’t. There are many things tolerated by liberals that shouldn’t be (third world violent savagery against the west, brutality against women, coercive tribalism, genocide being treated as an “internal matter”, ect.)

Would we be better off than South America if we tolerated the mafia? What would happen to a society that tolerates religiously motivated rape and killing? ect.

Tolerance should be a contract, not a free gift to any given group or person: We will tolerate you and leave you in peace as long as you honestly agree to tolerate us and leave us in peace.
