Each and every living being is an island unto themselves, a simplified caricature (both in personality and appearance, moreso in personality) in the mind of every other living being that makes contact with him or her. We simplify because we do not possess the brain capacity or patience to realize the true scale of each being’s existence.
Nobody will ever be truly understood and/or correctly analyzed, but their many facades and numerous miniscule parts of their personality will be, whether or not the analyzation is correct/accurate.
Loneliness will always prevail; what provides one with the illusion of not being alone is merely you yourself, constantly reassuring yourself in your own brain.
I like Red Hot Chili Peppers, too. I also used to live in North Carolina, and am very glad that is no longer the case.
I also think each individual is unique, different, not the same as any other… but if you want to say an ‘island’… if you mean we are so different we can not find another similar enough to us that we can enjoy their companionship… Well, I think most times there is at least some sort of unifying similarity between each island, or some sort of trade route goin’ on… if not, I would agree… loneliness would prevail. But you’d have to be/feel pretty darn different, or pretty darn isolated (physically), for that to be true. Geniuses can feel that way, and in an attempt to escape it, try to appear more normal… like others. Not that I would know from experience.
err… thats really odd… I just wrote a piece about this in the creative writing forum and used the same expression island unto ourselves. Now I’m having a hard time remebering if I had read that here and it creeped into my mind while I wrote, If formulated the idea myself, or read it somewhere else, nevertheless I agree with you.
