Isn't the hierarchy of internet forums like feudalism?

the administrater (king) appoints who he seems to like to vassal lords.-moderators- which in turn, answering only to him, appoint subordinates as they see fit?

there may be only 2 ranks of authority on this forum,(admin, mod) i’m unsure. on dgemu.com there are super mods, which are presumably higher than normal mods. feel free to fill me in on forum structures with even more ranks.

also i was wondering if someone would compare it too a different goverment type. but think about this:what if a forum had mod’s appointed democratically? i’m not sure any forum works that way.

and dare i say:popularity is not adeptitude!(whoops.there may be democrats in the building. )

so what say you,ILP?

It’s not feudal. In a feudal system, at least in later developments, the serfs had rights. This is a strict dictatorship. Absolute monarchy.

By the way, where are the supermods? Can we get pictures? Is Kristy Brinkley one of them?

There is no democracy here. One might consider it an “enlightened monarchy”. While there are rules of acceptable behavior, (guidelines) most members find ILP to be a good balance between extremes. There are flame sites with little or no governance, and sites where you are banned for forgetting to dot an i. Moderation and administration is strictly at the pleasure of the site owner.

I used to run a board where there was a site owner, administrators, global moderators, and moderators (regular).

I tried my best to select a diverse group of people who shared my goal in running a great website.

Due to time constraints, I had to hand my board off to a friend to run.

Personally, I like how this website is run. I think that the mods are an interesting mix of people.

More like a Star Trek convention than a Fuedal system really…

exhibit A:

question:i thought site owner WAS ranked as administrator? so site owner is it’s own rank? at some boards thier rank is displayed by thier name like the one i posted. at ILP,it is not. it is a bit harder to find out who the mods are at ILP.(if you are new mostly)

Mods are easy to identify. Look in the forums index under who is in the forums. Moderator names appear in green, adminstrator in orange. Additionally most forums have a forum leader, a mod with specific responsibility for that forum. Like all sites we’re not “on” all the time, so who is moderating at any given time can change.

in theory you can only find out then if they are A)online B)official mod of(forum leader) a forum.

tent,i checked your profile and there it does not say if you are a mod or not.

and yah, after 600 posts i noticed those methods you mentioned, but thanks anyway.

Here, it’s one and the same thing. Ben is the site owner and overall administrator.

It can be, but it isn’t here.

True enough.

That’s the staff. Ben is admin, all others are moderators, except for myself. I’m a member of staff with a broad portfolio encompassing various aspects of site development but I’m not licensed (despite numerous angry threats that I’ve made in the heat of the moment) to edit or delete any posts whatsoever. Like I say, all the others in that group are mods. I hope that this makes things nice and clear.

If this has been a recurring problem, you should perhaps look into one of those newer keyboards that does it automatically!

Hi Ucc,

LOL, I need the keyboard that writes grammatically correct, and knows how to speeel. The board I use doesn’t know shit.

Drift, could you tell me where you got a keyboard that doesn’t automatically dot the "i"s? I think that’d be a great way to get revenge on all of those people with incoherent posts

I don’t think you should describe a system like this the same way as a country’s government, because the only thing being governed at ILP is what people post, not the individuals themselves. Everyone chooses with virtually no coercion or force involved to come and post under the rule of the mods, so it’s a feudal system that also adheres to social contract theory; a feudal system that is more democratic than the United States #-o Not exactly what people think of when you say “feudal.”

Just for the record, although in that list, I’m not a mod. I own the server ILP lives on and have been helping out with dev/biz stuff.

first of all, thanks to everyone for thier enlightening comments. i dont know about how to leave the dots off of I’s. equally mysterious is how to add accent symbols to words?(my best solution on this is to capitalize all your I’s or use 1’s or l’s instead. that’ll teach the buggers!)

like seriously! i cant even type expose because it needs that thing over the ending E.

and, that would explain why OBW knows so much about all this technical stuff.

I got kicked off of Something Awful for indirectly proposing that the moderators act like the gestapo. They call it “mod sass.” In all honesty, the forums there aren’t worth ten dollars.

I mostly posted in the Philosophy section anyway, so I was fortunate to find this forum that hones into my areas of interest.
