What I like about Nietzsche is his direct, no-nonsense literary approach. He beats you over the head with his aphorisms and imagery, which is such a contrast to the drudging rigor of a Hegel or Kant or Spinoza who preceded him. I read Zarathustra (along with an introductory companion) right after fighting my way through The Ethics and found the stark contrast both enlightening and a breath of fresh air. Philosophy was entertaining again.
Still, Nietzsche, moreso than any other western philosopher, tends to generate this rabid fanaticism in his followers (at least the newbe’s) that grates my nerves. They worship him like an idol. I don’t get that. Too much Nietzsche gets tiresome to me. And so I find myself ragging on Nietzsche just to annoy them, where I would be singing his praises to a neutral audience.
