I've been volunteered to do a talk tomorrow

In front of the staff at the leisure centre plus assorted others from the council and who knows who else. Not looking forward to it.

You’ll do fine. Make reminders about the key topics and conclusions, if you get nervous then take your time, breathe, and stay focused on your current topic.

I’m supposed to take half an hour and be ready for questions too.

You wouldn’t be asked to speak if people didn’t already have confidence in your ability to say something meaningful or important, don’t worry about the questions. If you can’t answer a question, just say “yes” or “no” and move onto the next question.

I suppose so. Just a bit nervous. It’s all about boring stuff like accessibility in the workplace.

The main thing is to take your time and breathe, before moving onto your next point, or answering a more difficult question.

Adding a joke or two, if you feel comfortable with that, is also great to do upon your introduction or opening. If people are laughing and you’re smiling, then you’ll feel a lot more comfortable, relaxed, and confident.

I guess I’m quite used to cracking jokes to make people feel comfortable.

Ask the audience if the lights are too bright and if they can see you well enough.

Ok lol. As a joke, you mean?

Of course!

We’ll see…

Haha, exactly

Well, it went ok.

did you have any trouble with nerves, did you crack any jokes? how’d it go?

Ok is better than “ran home crying”.

I told them that I was feeling nervous but I had heard somewhere that the best way to cure that is not to look at the audience.

That probably got you a big laugh and applause eh?

Maybe more of an embarrassed silence.

Aw that’s too bad. Practice your jokes on strangers and remember to grin wide after telling the punchline. Your face tells the real humor behind it.

I can’t do body language.
