Jobs for Philosophers

Nicky

Is it supposed to be irony that you bring up the description “jobless and seem to be hurting” and then specify Joker? Or did you simply miss this?

Hey BA3OB

I just finished my degree in philosophy, and am now starting the whole job-exploration thing. Teaching abroad does sound like a great experience, as I do wanna get of the UK for a while (or ever). One thing though: how could I teach english effectively when I can´t speak their language? How well would I have to learn theirs? Japan looks very enticing to me!

Nicky

Thanks a bunch for your advice, I´ll be sure to check the sites out. Most countries do appeal to me, but I think I´ll avoid Saudi and UAE!

Hi,

I taught english in Tokyo for two years. Japan is a blast and I recommend it. And no, you won’t need to speak the language for your classes.

Check out job listings at jobsinjapan.com or gaijinpot.com. Both have been very useful to me.

cheers pard

and btw, is that a howard marx avatar?

Tom Baker…

the actor?

the actor, yes.

fan?

nah, not really…

why the photo?

I was kidding, I am a fan of Baker. He’s excellent as Dr. Who, and of course the villain in Sindbad and the Golden Voyage. But really, I like his wacky facial expressions.

This photo in particular looks how I feel when reading philosophy…

EDIT: oh, did you mean the link to the photo? It’s irreverent. I like that.

Actually, I’m not even precisely sure what the gesture means, just that it’s rude.

You’re from the UK. Shed some light?

Anyone can get into hotel management. Just start out as a desk clerk, most managers want to yank their hair out after about six months and they just walk out on the job, no notice or anything. So, as long as you’re the most personable of the desk clerks you get the job. At best, you’ll last nine months, but I’ve seen some people last less than one month.

In the UK two fingers is both a tamer alternative to the (more personal) offensive middle finger, but can also be used as a more general rebellious-type “fuck authority” gesture. Yet it´s a little old-fashioned and can now be used in a more humorous way. Don´t Americans ever use two?

Yeah but it means “peace”.
I’ve not seen anyone use 2 fingers since i went to primary school.

Nope. Americans never use two fingers…

Yeah but I was on about the back of your fingers facing outwards. “Peace” is done the other way innit. (Check out paridact´s photo link)
