Karl Rove, Goebbels. Who is who?

it took me a while, but here it is.

I have here two speeches, one from Karl Rove and
one from Joseph Goebbels.

The Karl rove speech is from the Heritage foundation
in September 16, 2002 and the Goebbels speech is
from 1938, date unknown.

You get to guess which one is which.

Have fun.

The function of propaganda lies in calling the masses
attention to certain facts, process and necessities, whose
significance is for the first time placed within their field of vision.

The whole are consists in doing this so skillfully that everyone will
be convinced that the fact is real, the process necessary, the necessity
correct.

Its effect, for the most part must be aimed at the emotions and only to
a very limited degree at the intellect.

All propaganda must be popular and its intellectual level must
be adjusted to the most limited intelligence among
those it is addressed to.

Consequently, the greater the mass it is intended to reach,
the lower its purely intellectual level will have to be.

The art of propaganda lies in understanding the emotional ideas
of the great masses and finding, through a psychologically
correct from, the to the attention and thence to the heart of the
broad masses.

It is a mistake to make propaganda many-sided, like scientific
instruction, for instance.

(quick note on this one, notice the GOP does the bumper
sticker philosophy. their whole philosophy can fit on a car’s bumper
sticker. Tax and spend liberals, cut and run, I am sure there are
a gazillion others)

Effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points
and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of
the public understands what you want him to understand
by your slogan. As soon as you sacrifice this slogan and
try to be many-sided, the effect will piddle away, for the
crowd can neither digest nor retain the material offered.
in this way the result is weakened and in the end entirely
cancelled out.

It must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.
Here as so often in this world, persistence is the first and most
important requirement for success.

Now here is the other guy.

The cleverest trick used in propaganda was to accuse your
enemies of doing themselves what you are doing.

Propaganda is a means to an end. It purpose is to lead the people
to an understanding that will allow them to willingly and
without internal resistance devote themselves to the tasks and
goals of a superior leadership.

Propaganda is the sharpest weapon in conquering the state,
in defending the state and in building the state.

Propaganda in the end, miraculously makes the
unpopular popular, enabling even a government most difficult
decisions to secure the resolute support of the people.

There are no opposing parties in any longer. How could we have
overcome them had we not waged a campaign for years that
persuaded people of their weaknesses, harms and disadvantages?
Their final elimination was only the result of what the people
had already realized. Our propaganda weakened these parties.

Propaganda is the matter of productive fantasy. It requires
alert attention to the events of the day, and a complete knowledge
of the soul for the people for only then can one speak in a way
that the people will understand. Propaganda must be the science of the
soul of the people. It requires an organized and purposeful system
if it is to be successful in the long run.

I have others if you need them.

So is Karl Rove the first speaker or the second.
And which one is Joesph Goebbels.

Kropotkin

I think the second is Rove.

Both are correct in their assertions.

Rove learned at the feet of the master.
Nobody did propaganda like Goebbels.
Later I shall say, who is who.

Kropotkin

The second is blatantly Rove, I reckon Gobbo’s right.

However, I’d question this, from the first speech:

This is what convinced me that the first one is a Nazi take on propaganda. I don’t think that someone as smart as Rove would fail to appreciate the value of overcomplicating (a classic 21st century spin technique) any given issue, of deliberately fuelling diverse opinions in order to stop the masses from uniting in large enough groups to challenge the leadership. If Rove did say this, then he’s not as smart as I’ve taken him to be.

A classic example - if the masses opposed to the Bush administration believe a dozen different versions of ‘the truth about Bush’ (e.g. that he’s a total idiot, that he’s incompetent, that he’s a puppet and is being lied to by whoever is really pulling the strings, that he’s fully complicit in all the corruption but doesn’t lead it, that he does lead it, that he’s secretly very smart but pretends to be dumb to gain popularity and deflect serious criticism…) then no single direct critical movement will form against the government. Divide and conquer. Not unite and then try to conquer. The latter is much much harder to maintain after the initial coup.

I am sorry imp has not shown any interest in this
post. It was done with him specifically in mind.

Kropotkin

why should I care about whom you call names?

propaganda techniques are used by all politicians. especially your comrades in slavery on the left.

-Imp

Impenitent: why should I care about whom you call names?
propaganda techniques are used by “all” politicians. especially your comrades in slavery on the left.

K: But the two masters in the art of Propaganda are right
wingers. And aren’t you the least bit curious which
one is rove and which one is Goebbels?

Kropotkin

socialists are left wing.

-Imp

Impenitent: “socialists are left wing.”

K: feel free to name a great propagandist who is a left winger.
