Laugh-Out-Loud Books

There are lots of funny books out there, but I don’t think there are many that cause proper outbreaks of laughter. For me personally, various works by Samuel Beckett are LOL-inducing, as are “The Henry Root Letters”, which I heartily recommend to anyone who hasn’t already read them.

Which books (not including joke books) have made you LOL?

Myth Inc. series by Robert Asprin

Naked - David Sedaris

The Groucho Letters: Letter from and to Groucho Marx

Thanks for the suggestions - I’ll try to look into some of them.

Actually, the lead singer of the matthew good band (matthew good) wrote a book a few years ago, I forget what it was called but it was basically a bunch of short stories and little remarks by him about various things.

It absolutely killed me… that guy should have gone into comedy instead of music.

I’m sorry, but speaking of comedy, this made me laugh. You’ll try to look into some of them? There were only three suggestions at the time!

Haha. I should add that the Myth Inc. series is very long, so there are in fact quite a lot of books there, and David Sedaris has written a fair amount too. I’ll probably go for Groucho first, as I’d heard of him.

Fair enough. Still made me laugh, though. :sunglasses:

I’m pleased to hear it  If you want another laugh or two, read my short story “The Mysterious Hole” which will be up on Symposia before too long. (If you can’t wait, look it up in the Creative Writing forum.)

Incidentally, the other reason for my non-commitance was that I’m a bit lazy, so thought it wise to cover my back in the event of any PMs asking me where I’m up to in book X!

Will definately check it out, Chim.

Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy of Five

The Complete Book Of Farting by Alex Bromcie
101 Uses For A Dead Cat, can’t seem to find the author (or the book).

hilarious books.

I remember this book from my childhood! It’s a vague memory, but one image comes to mind: ‘Pencil Sharpener’ - where the accompanying illustration is a pencil shoved up the cat’s ass. Crude when merely read in text, perhaps, but I remember laughing hysterically.

Yep, I’ve read 101 uses for a dead cat as well. You’re right, Daybreak, it’s remarkably crude but inescapably funny.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.

It is also a tear-jerker.

Yep, this series should be tops on any humor list. The movie did not do it justice, failed miserably compared to the books. Don’t forget your towel when you read it.

I’ve only read 3 books in the trilogy so I should really read the other two before posting my comments. But I think that they are bloody hilarious. Not quite as surreal as Robert Rankin’s ‘Armageddon 2: The B-movie’ but along similar lines.

My girlfriend really liked this book and gave it to me to read. I was never able to put my finger on why, but I just couldn’t get into it. (There is almost zero value to this comment, I understand.) Although I do remember enjoying his tales about not getting on The Real World.

Ya know, the more I think about it - I think I was jealous of the guy, his intelligence and whatnot, that’s why I didn’t care for it.

some book i found really weird: The Dummies Guide To Fixing Your Car.

here’s how to overhaul an engine:

  1. Take out the engine
  2. Replace anything faulty
  3. Put it back in and drive away

I kid you not, that was the overhaul bit! i never knew it was so easy… i’ll just try it with my swiss army knife. haha.
