As you may or may not know, we currently have two* major style types on ILP: One with profiles on the left, one with the profiles on the right (the default).
While options are good, more options means more upkeep. And paradoxically, more upkeep in turn means fewer options, since the burden of doing twice the work to make any change is a surprisingly large disincentive to any changes to the site. Thus, one of the two styles will be shuttered. And thus the poll.
Poll will close in three days.
[tab]The ads/no ads styles are another large division. But it’s the left/right dichotomy that’s being eliminated, for a few reasons. The most cogent:
The ads versions are a much smaller change than the left/right versions. Fewer lines, fewer files, and the changes are easier to work around.
Neither mandatory ads nor a totally ad free site strike me as desirable.
And it’s not exactly true that each new style adds significantly to the burden, but it is true of two dichotomies.[/tab]
I think that the profiles should be on the left side just because of the simple reason that we use to start writing from left. Thus, something written or pasted on the left side is normal.
But, if something is there on the right side even before starting the writing, then it somewhat gives the impression as we are filling the gaps.
I don’t care, but it would make sense (at least to me) to go with the default, such that if one did not intentionally make a change from the default, there would not be a change.
How are you counting the votes, Carleas? Are you ignoring the ‘I don’t care’ votes and only basing it on which of the left/right ones have more votes? Does ‘I don’t care’ count as a quarter-vote for right? Should I make new accounts just to vote for left?
Math whizs, according to the talley all three are equal at 33%. … Ok so if that is 100% of the votes, where is the 1% left over? Should it not be 33 1/3 %?
I think it’s more a case like that movie Office Space. In that movie, all rounding-down calculations in the system got added to their bank account. Maybe when vote percentages get rounded down, the missing vote fractions go to someone the Illuminati wants to get in, or something like that.
