In reading criticism on Nietzsche, it is often mentioned that Hegel proclaimed “God is dead”, the famous Nietzsche catch phrase, well before Nietzsche did. Although this has reappeared in many criticisms, I haven’t been able to find a reference to where Hegel states this or how it fits into his philosophy.
I would imagine it would have something to be that since an almost godly enlightenment would be the ultimate synthesis in the evolution of the mind of man, the idea of god or godliness is merely a goal rather than an entity? I could be completely wrong, but hopefully someone can help clear this up for me.
So does anyone know where Hegel allegedly previously stated ‘god is dead’, and how he justified it?
