I’ve recently been reading the “great books”, and thought that it would be cool if ILP had a literature forum. A place to talk about Marcus Aurelius’s “Meditations”, The Bhagavad Gita, Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar”, and the like. Whaddyaaa think?
That’s a pretty good idea, and it makes me wonder if the Visual Arts forum shouldn’t just be changed to ‘The Arts’ or ‘The Humanities’ to cover a lot of this sort of ground at the same time.
Parsimonious I like it.
Rounder,
It’s a good idea, and believe me, one I’ve already considered. The question is, ‘would it get used?’
I posted some of my literature essays (I study it) and they don’t get a huge amount of interest and I’ve tried a couple of times to start literary discussions in the Creative Writing forum but it just doesn’t seem that there are many here who are into it.
We’ll see - if a lot of people post here saying that they want one then it may well happen.
You’re just gonna breeze right past my supplemental suggestion?
No, I’m giving it ‘due consideration’ before rejecting it…
I’m not sure - we only just opened the art forum so splitting its aims at this stage might not be the best move. We’ll see what others say.
Rounder- It’s funny you should mention that a literature forum would be a great idea.
I was thinking the same last week. I think that members would use it more often than not.
Good suggestion.
Incidentally, literature is another word that Americans can’t pronounce. Lidd-rrr-rrr-chrrr…
Of course, most British pronounce it
Lih-rih-chuh
so they’re no better…
I pronounce the word lit-er-a-chur.
I blame it on my Midwestern accent.

what’s a book?
I say ‘litter-a-chur’.
litter-a-chur is easier than trash-in-a-couch

That is unfortunate then. I am sorry to say that it has taken me some time to get around to some of the classics, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I think there is much that could be ‘philosophized’ about from our classics. The greek tragedy’s spawned Nietzsche!! And their lessons are powerful, our past history is powerful.
Also we don’t talk much about Plato, and Socrates here. Phaedo, or the Republic . Have these old philosophies become literature? Perhaps we could discuss their themes more in such a forum.
I honestly think it is a shame that more do not encounter these books in their lifetime. Maybe the forum would generate interest, I think that would be noble in itself, even if it did not generate many posts in the beginning. we could have an ILP classic book club!
This could be a good idea. I’m all for discussing ancient literature… too.
Maybe a sort of “book of the month” idea, all read the same thing… discuss aspects.
Obviously, purchased via ILP affiliate links for good measure…!
I think that a classical “book of the month” club could be a great idea.
I love the idea of a literature forum. I’m getting back into reading more for leisure (not just for classes) and this would be the perfect place to discuss all sorts of literature.
I can imagine that I’d also pick up some excellent recommendations from other ILPers.
I already picked up one from SIATD. I’ll probably have to order the book through Amazon. Otherwise, I have to special order it from a story here in the city.
Yes, a Literature Forum would definitely be a good idea. I’m all for it.
A collective act of reading and interpreting a book would also be an appropriate act. It could have a therapeutical effect and serve to relieve certain animosities between posters. The cliques that randomly form in the rant house or whatever would forget their differencies if persuaded to creatively contribute to a common goal.
Plus, it would give me the opportunity to wheedle Dulcet and sway her into marrying me.
There are cliques here at ILP?
I’d most likely be more motivated to read (for leisure) if we had a Literature. A majority of my friends aren’t interested in the same literature that I am. It would be fun to read these stories (at the same time) and break down the texts.
Plus, it would give me the opportunity to wheedle Dulcet and sway her into marrying me.
I think this is the sweetest thing I’ve ever read.
It’s the sweetest thing I’ve had in mind all day, besides your name.
How adorable.
