I’m talking about pathologically low self esteem, of course. People who have no reason to have low SE but they still do.

If it’s pathological it’s not evolutionary. Animals don’t generally evolve to have diseases. As a matter of fact, we can omit the generally – they don’t. they just don’t.
However, I would posit that calling it pathological is very likely mischaracterizing it in the first place, but that’s a separate discussion.
Maybe he just not been in the right place at the right time.
