Man in the Universe

Have you ever looked at the stars on a cloudless night? They’re beautiful. They instill a sense of the incredible vastness of the Universe in which we live. It makes our existence seem so trivial, almost futile, in the grand scheme of things. But at the same time, there is a great yearning to effect change on human society, to make our lives less insignificant, and that urge is one that drives me to realize my greatest potential as a fully capable human being.
Mankind is a young race in this world, we have much learn: we fight wars and kill millions of people, some of us are dying of hunger while others indulge to excess, we steal from each other, we hurt each other. The single most inescapable thought is “Why? Why do we this to each other?” And until we can answer that question, the human race will forever suffer. Although one man may be smarter than another, may wear better clothes than another, may have more money than another, that does not make him better than another, for material possessions are invisible before the eyes of the Creator.
We have much to learn a race, but I do not doubt that we will learn. Humans will always have the desire to bring about change to their world, to make it better for their children. I have faith that through time, Man will learn to discard the primitive crutch on materialism, corruption, hate, and greed, and we will, as a species, find our place in the Universe.

The state of mankind is a sorry one indeed. Mankind seems determined in it course. Hopefully things will turn around and the world will develop into a better place for everyone. Communism failed and with it some of that hope was lost for a better world. At the same time there is very little on which we can rely. The knowledge of good and evil is debated daily and also whether such things really exist. The task seems insurmountable. All we can do to try to change the situation for the better is to think about what good and evil are and try to maximise the amount of goodness in the world.

Man is still fighting to overcome his lower, reptilian brain. (Have you read Carl Sagan’s Cosmos? I think you’d like it) It is something that is constant throughout human history, we are very selfish creatures, still animals, but with immense power and therefore immense responsibility to do what is right. We are capable of great things, if we can overcome our greed and our hate. It’s still up in the air whether we’ll survive with this immense power that we’ve cultivated through the sciences, but if we do endure and keep educating, I think, we will see a birth of a new era of mankind, one that knows the most fundamentally important things, which are love and knowledge.

An optimists view, but like Conan said a few weeks back, “Don’t be cynical, be kind and good and amazing things will happen” if only we all could think like that.

But you have to answer this question: What is a ‘good’ man good for? Will his ‘goodness’ and whatever each individual considers his ’goodness’ collectively form a ‘good’ reality? Or is a man’s ‘goodness’ determined by what society’s reality says is good?
